Our immigration law firm is seeking a FOIA Legal Assistant to manage Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for the entire firm.

This is a specialized position responsible for preparing, submitting, tracking, and reviewing FOIA requests from start to finish. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing deadlines while ensuring every request is processed accurately and efficiently.

Your work will play a critical role in helping attorneys obtain the records needed to evaluate and build immigration cases.

What You'll Do

FOIA Management

  • Prepare and submit FOIA requests to USCIS, CBP, EOIR, ICE, and other government agencies.
  • Ensure all requests are complete, accurate, and accompanied by the necessary supporting documentation.
  • Monitor pending requests and follow up with agencies regarding status updates and delays.
  • Maintain organized records and tracking systems for all firm FOIA requests.
  • Manage deadlines and ensure timely follow-up on outstanding matters.
  • Communicate with clients (in English and Spanish) regarding the status of their FOIA requests and any additional information or documentation needed.

Records Review

  • Review FOIA responses upon receipt to confirm all requested records have been provided.
  • Identify incomplete or missing records and initiate additional follow-up when necessary.
  • Organize and upload records into the firm's case management system.
  • Prepare records for attorney review and schedule the appropriate attorney once records have been received and evaluated.
  • Explain FOIA records and next steps to clients in both English and Spanish, ensuring clear understanding of how the information impacts their case.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Fluent in English and Spanish, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients regarding sensitive case matters.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage a large volume of requests and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to work independently and stay on top of multiple projects.

This is an entry-level position. We provide full training on FOIA procedures and agency-specific processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preparing and managing FOIA requests.
  • Experience working in immigration law.
  • Familiarity with USCIS, CBP, EOIR, and ICE processes.
  • Experience using legal case management software.
