The MCC Radiation Oncology Registered Nurse - Intermediate provides direct nursing care to patients at the Mays Cancer Center. Demonstrates independence when preparing equipment and aiding physicians during the treatment and examination of patients. Works under the limited supervision of the department leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Assists assigned medical provider and mid-level in the clinical setting including but not limited to: the physical examination of patients, performing complex medical testing and providing interpretations of results, consulting with physicians and implements treatment plan and the administration of medications and injections as needed.
  • Works closely with the assigned medical assistant to ensure all chart preparation is complete and ready for clinic.
  • Works closely with assigned scheduler to ensure referrals, follow up appointments, diagnostic tests, etc. are scheduled accordingly per medical provider/mid-level orders.
  • Calls-in prescriptions and refills for patients.
  • Obtains prior authorization as needed on medications, diagnostic tests, and other medical procedures.
  • Triages patient calls and works closely with call center team members.
  • Assists and arranges for hospital admissions as needed.
  • Follows-up on diagnostic tests and labs, and ensures they are reported to the medical provider.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrates the ability to function within the required nursing process as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates the ability to support the mission, vision and patient promise throughout all interactions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively, written and verbally.
  • Demonstrates analytical thinking – this role requires analyzing information and using logic to coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to participate as an integral part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing the highest quality of care to the patient.
  • Required certifications must remain current and valid.
  • Ability to serve as a preceptor and a mentor by fostering a teaching environment. Position eligible for preceptor premium pay with completion of preceptor education and leader approval.

EDUCATION:

Associates degree in Nursing required.

 

EXPEREINCE:

Three (3) years of professional nursing experience is required.  

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Active TX Nursing licensure required.

Active CPR/BLS required. 

PALS  - Certified Pediatric Advanced Life Support required within 60 days of employment. 

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life support required within 60 days of employment.
