About the Role:

The Surgical Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring the seamless planning and execution of surgical procedures within a healthcare facility. This position serves as the primary liaison between surgeons, patients, medical staff, and administrative teams to coordinate all aspects of surgical scheduling and preparation. The Surgical Coordinator is responsible for managing patient information, verifying insurance coverage, and facilitating communication to optimize surgical workflow and patient care. By efficiently organizing resources and timelines, this role helps minimize delays and enhances the overall patient experience. Ultimately, the Surgical Coordinator contributes to the delivery of high-quality surgical services by maintaining accuracy, compliance, and effective collaboration across departments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree or higher in healthcare administration or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in surgical coordination or medical office administration.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and surgical procedures.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and scheduling software.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with insurance verification processes and healthcare billing.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements such as HIPAA and OSHA.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and schedule surgical procedures in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and patients.
  • Verify patient insurance coverage and obtain necessary authorizations prior to surgery.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, surgical schedules, and documentation in compliance with healthcare regulations.
  • Communicate pre-operative instructions and post-operative care information to patients and their families.
  • Serve as a point of contact for patients, addressing questions and concerns related to surgical appointments and preparation.
  • Collaborate with hospital departments to ensure availability of operating rooms, equipment, and necessary personnel.
  • Monitor and track surgical case progress and update relevant stakeholders on any changes or delays.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to improve surgical coordination efficiency.

The Surgical Coordinator utilizes strong organizational skills daily to manage complex surgical schedules and ensure all necessary preparations are completed on time. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with patients, surgeons, and multidisciplinary teams to convey critical information clearly and compassionately.
