Overview

We are looking for a Project Manager I – Technical/Domain Project Manager to support client technology projects in San Diego. This hybrid role will help plan and deliver Distribution Operations initiatives, including outage management, forecasting operations, solar and battery data integrations, automation, data engineering, analytics, and related special projects. The role will work with client project teams, business units, engineering stakeholders, IT/OT partners, vendors, and delivery teams to turn requirements into clear plans and move work from planning through deployment.

Responsibilities

Technical Delivery & Execution Leadership

  • Lead day-to-day work for outage management, forecasting operations, solar and battery data integrations, automation, analytics, and other Distribution Operations technology projects.
  • Turn technical requirements into practical delivery plans, sprint backlogs, testing activities, and release milestones.
  • Coordinate work for integrations, automations, data models, and system updates with data engineers, analysts, architects, cybersecurity teams, and vendors.
  • Support release readiness, including UAT, staging, production deployment, cutover planning, and change control.

Integration Management – Distribution Operations, Data Engineering, and Analytics

  • Coordinate integration work across operational platforms, data pipelines, cloud analytics, Power Platform solutions, reporting tools, and automation services.
  • Work with data engineers on ETL/ELT pipelines, APIs, real-time data feeds, time-series data, and modeling outputs.
  • Review data schemas, interfaces, and system touchpoints to support reliable operations and accurate reporting.
  • Work with cybersecurity and access management teams to confirm integrations meet security and audit requirements.

Project Controls, Scheduling & Quality Assurance

  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules covering sprints, releases, integration waves, testing cycles, dependency alignments, and resource plans.
  • Track scope, schedule, budget, risks, issues, assumptions, and dependencies; identify variances and implement corrective actions.
  • Lead structured defect management, root-cause analysis documentation, regression tracking, and readiness assessments.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation including technical requirements, test scripts, integration maps, release notes, status reports, and decision logs.

Engineering Collaboration & Technical Decision Support

  • Work closely with Grid Operations, Distribution Operations, Distribution Engineering, DER Engineering, Data Science, IT, OT, and business unit stakeholders to verify technical requirements and operational use cases.
  • Support requirements related to outage operations, forecasting workflows, solar and battery data, operational decision-support tools, dashboards, and analytics.
  • Facilitate design reviews with IT/OT architects and vendor engineering teams to validate technical feasibility, performance expectations, operational risk, and maintainability.
  • Serve as the delivery lead ensuring technical solutions meet engineering rigor, client priorities, and real-world operational needs.

Operational Readiness, Training & Deployment Enablement

  • Coordinate training, documentation, and knowledge-transfer sessions for operators, analysts, engineers, and system support teams.
  • Develop operational readiness plans to ensure new tools, dashboards, workflows, and data models are adopted and understood by end users.
  • Support field testing, pilot deployments, parallel runs, go-live preparation, and stabilization periods for new technology deployments.

Vendor Coordination & Program Standards

  • Manage day-to-day coordination with software vendors, integration partners, system integrators, and data or analytics service providers.
  • Make sure vendor deliverables match the agreed requirements, integration needs, service commitments, and client program standards.
  • Coordinate contract deliverables, SLAs, test validations, technical documentation reviews, and issue-resolution activities.
  • Keep client sponsors, business-unit leaders, project teams, and consulting firm leadership informed on progress, risks, and next steps.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience managing technical projects in utilities, energy, operational technology, grid modernization, data engineering, systems integration, or enterprise technology environments.
  • Working knowledge of project management practices including scheduling, scope management, risk and issue tracking, change control, status reporting, and quality assurance.
  • Ability to coordinate work across client stakeholders, business units, engineers, architects, analysts, vendors, and technical delivery teams.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into practical delivery plans and executive-ready status updates.
  • Familiarity with Agile, hybrid, or structured project delivery methods and tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, or similar platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting DERMS or similar utility operational projects is preferred, including exposure to SCADA, OMS, EMS, GIS, AMI, distribution automation, outage management, forecasting operations, solar or battery data integrations, or other Distribution Operations platforms.
  • Exposure to data engineering, ETL/ELT pipelines, APIs, cloud analytics, time-series data, automation tools, or Power Platform solutions.
  • Understanding of IT/OT integration, cybersecurity controls, access management, audit requirements, and production release governance.
  • Experience supporting UAT, system integration testing, operational readiness, training, cutover, go-live, and post-deployment stabilization.
  • PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, Scrum Master, Agile, ITIL, or utility-domain certifications are a plus.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

Salary range for this position is $155,000 - $175,000.  The starting salary will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
