Litigation Paralegal

 

Reports to: Director of Legal Counsel

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

 

Position Summary

The Senior Litigation Paralegal provides comprehensive support to the Legal Department in defending professional liability, elder abuse, wrongful death, regulatory, and other healthcare-related claims involving skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, and long-term care operations.

The position will work closely with in-house counsel, outside defense counsel, risk management personnel, facility leadership, and insurance carriers. The ideal candidate possesses significant experience handling healthcare litigation, particularly long-term care, nursing home, skilled nursing, elder abuse, medical malpractice, or professional liability matters.

This role is heavily focused on discovery management, factual investigation, medical record requests and analysis, claim evaluation, litigation coordination, and settlement support across a portfolio of claims involving multiple facilities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Litigation & Discovery Support

  • Manage and coordinate discovery responses in professional liability, elder abuse, wrongful death, and related litigation.
  • Collect, organize, and review facility records, medical records, personnel records, policies, procedures, and other litigation-related documents.
  • Coordinate document preservation and litigation hold activities.
  • Work directly with facility administrators, directors of nursing, risk managers, regional personnel, and other operational staff to gather information relevant to claims and litigation.
  • Track discovery deadlines, court dates, expert disclosures, and other litigation milestones.
  • Assist counsel in preparing responses to interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admission, subpoenas, and deposition notices.
  • Organize and maintain litigation databases, document repositories, and claim files.
  • Assist in evaluating exposure and litigation risk.

Settlement & Resolution Support

Outside Counsel & Insurance Coordination

  • Serve as point of contact for routine communications with outside defense counsel.
  • Coordinate with insurance carriers, TPAs, and brokers regarding claims and litigation matters.
  • Ensure reporting deadlines and carrier requirements are met.

Regulatory & Risk Management Support

  • Assist with analysis of incident reports, complaints, regulatory surveys, and claims trends.
  • Support internal investigations.
  • Help identify risk-management opportunities and litigation-prevention initiatives.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of litigation paralegal experience.
  • Minimum 3 years supporting healthcare, medical malpractice, professional liability, elder abuse, nursing home, or long-term care litigation matters.
  • Strong experience coordinating discovery in complex litigation.
  • Experience reviewing and summarizing medical records.
  • Knowledge of California civil litigation procedures.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to create, edit, format, track, and manage legal documents, spreadsheets, reports, correspondence, and case-related materials.
  • Ability to organize and maintain electronic files, discovery materials, medical records, claim files, and confidential legal documents.
  • Ability to independently manage a large volume of active matters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, Paralegal Certificate, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience supporting in-house legal departments.
  • Experience with skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, healthcare systems, or healthcare insurers.
  • Familiarity with California long-term care regulations and healthcare reimbursement systems.
  • Experience using litigation management systems, document repositories, electronic file-sharing platforms, and case tracking tools.
  • Comfort learning and using new legal, healthcare, and business software systems as needed.


 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach as needed during the workday.
  • Ability to use a computer, keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other standard office equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to read, review, and analyze electronic and paper documents, including medical records and litigation materials.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, by video conference, and in writing.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, or move files, binders, or office materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work Conditions

  • This is a hybrid position, with work performed both remotely and in a professional office environment as business needs require.
  • Position may require handling confidential, sensitive, and privileged information related to legal matters, claims, residents, employees, and facilities.
  • Must be able to manage competing priorities, deadlines, and a high volume of litigation-related tasks with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Occasional travel to company locations, facilities, hearings, mediations, or meetings may be required.
