Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are looking for a Structural Designer to join our San Diego, CA office. The successful new hire will have over 7 years of related design experience, and will join a team of engineers working throughout the Southern California and Pacific regions on large, complex, and exciting projects at local ports and waterfront facilities. This individual must be self-directed, dedicated, and committed to project success.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare design documents and reports for the structural design of piers, wharves, seawalls, buildings, and other miscellaneous structures using cast-in-place concrete, prestressed concrete, masonry, timber and steel
  • Lead and manage waterfront projects relating to:
    • Near-shore platforms, trestles, wharves, piers, docks, bulkheads, mooring/breasting structures, and liquid, gas, container and bulk terminals
    • Structural analysis, design, and detailing for concrete, steel, timber, etc.
    • Inspection, authoring assessment reports and developing rehabilitation plans of waterfront structures
    • Urban waterfront projects
    • Knowledge of shoreline protection material and breakwaters design
  • Perform calculations, prepare drawings, technical specifications, and write reports
  • Manage teams of structural designers and coordinate work with other disciplines to meet project schedules and budgets
  • Perform limited field observations in support of construction and data collection
  • Manage a team directly or through supervisors and professional staff; sets priorities and expectations; builds team capability
  • Build effective relationships with other departments
  • Develop construction drawings, specifications, cost estimates and structural calculation packages 
  • Oversee project budgets, contracting strategies, scheduling document preparation and support and evaluation

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; required
    • Master’s degree; preferred
  • Professional Engineer license (PE or SE) in the state of California or ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire; required
  • 7 to 10+ years of related structural design experience; required
  • Marine waterfront design experience; strongly preferred
  • Able to manage assigned design tasks with minimal oversight
  • Proficiency in software such as SAP2000, Bluebeam, Xtract, REVIT & AutoCAD
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
  • Moffatt & Nichol uses E-Verify and employment is contingent upon the legal ability to obtain employment in the U.S. and to present the required documentation at hire

Physical Requirements:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.

Base Salary Range: 

$135,000 to $210,000 annually based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description. 

Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the California market.
