About the Art Gallery

The Associated Students Art Gallery is located even on the top floor of the Student Center. Our student

funded and student staffed gallery is dedicated to amplifying artistic works of artists on and off campus. We

curate exhibitions that feature artists at any stage in their career. The gallery hosts exhibits, popup shows, and

receptions annually.

Position Summary


The Art Gallery Director oversees the management, curation, and promotion of the Associated Students Art

Gallery. This role combines artistic direction with administrative management, including curating exhibitions,

coordinating events, managing contracts, budgeting, and supervising staff. The Director will engage with

students and local artists, handle administrative tasks, and promote gallery events, while ensuring exhibitions

reflect diverse perspectives. Strong leadership, creativity, and the ability to balance artistic and operational

duties are key for this role. The Director will also foster relationships with campus communities and local

artists.

JOB DESCRIPTION:    

● Manages all aspects of the Art Gallery operations, both conceptual and logistical

coordination of scheduling art shows throughout the semester

● Research, contact artist groups, and networks to increase artists presence and gallery visibility

● Manages agreements and contracts, Art Gallery budget, and staff management

● Promote exhibitions through social media, posters, and campus communications.

● Organize gallery events, artist talks, and student engagement programs.

● Serve as a liaison between the gallery, student organizations, faculty, and the community.

● Work with other campus and off-campus galleries, community organizations, and museums

to collaborate on exhibits and develop partnerships.

● Act as a curator and looks for quality, aesthetic appeal for the selection of artwork for the

gallery.

● Coordinates room reservations using 25Live and updates the AS Program Event

Calendar

● Makes design and social media requests to create marketing materials for annual and

outreach events

● Responsible for updating the Program’s webpage, office guidelines and staff office hours

● Attends monthly Program Director meetings and scheduled trainings

● Prepares and submits written monthly and annual reports to Supervisor

● Other duties as assigned or required.

Diversity of Exhibits & Community Engagement

● Research and reach out to artist groups and networks to increase artist presence and gallery

visibility.

● Work with AS programs directors, faculty, students, and Bay Area community to design

thematic programming around the exhibit to ensure that the art is relevant to current issues.

● Work with other campus and off-campus galleries, community organizations, and museums

to collaborate on exhibits and develop partnerships.

Qualifications:    

● Must be currently enrolled at SFSU with a minimum of 6 units a semester for

undergraduates or 4 units for graduates.

● Previous curatorial and management experience and /exhibit research/installation

background.

● Willingness to learn and grow beyond one’s current state of cross-cultural awareness.

● Ability to work within an environment that is ethnically and culturally diverse, and that

emphasizes the knowledge and values related to cross and trans cultural communication and

relations.

● Strong computer competency: spreadsheets, word processing programs,

memos, organizing meetings, and filing

● Strong time management

Preferred:

● Art History, Studio, IAC Museum Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, and related

● Community Organization/Museum/Gallery experience or the equivalent

● Familiar with Mac, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or social media platforms

● Knowledge in exhibition design and preparation

Skills:

● Exceptional interpersonal skills

● Effective team building and collaboration.

● Analytical, decisive, and detail-oriented with strong communication and organizational skills.
