Backend Engineer

About the Role

Join a six-person engineering team building AI-native backend infrastructure for a healthtech company automating administrative clinical workflows. This role sits at the core of the product — powering agentic systems that handle clinical information for millions of patients and enable rapid customer onboarding, the company's primary growth lever.

What You'll Do

• Architect and deploy AI-native backend systems that process high-volume data via API.

• Build reliable, secure agentic infrastructure capable of handling sensitive clinical information at scale.

• Shape product iterations end-to-end by integrating direct customer feedback into development.

• Own critical backend infrastructure and drive its technical evolution.

• Scale systems and architecture to support rapid customer onboarding and company growth.

What We're Looking For

• 0–1 years of professional backend software development experience.

• 5+ years of overall software engineering experience building and delivering production systems.

• Proficiency in Python (required) and at least one systems programming language such as C, C++, Rust, or Go.

• Infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform or a similar tool (required).

• Experience designing and implementing scalable backend systems or infrastructure.

• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts (consensus, replication, fault tolerance).

• Experience with database systems or data storage technologies.

• Understanding of prompt engineering.

• Strong GitHub contribution profile with a history of active, meaningful commits.

• Experience with performance optimization and profiling.

• Currently employed at an established company.

• Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and/or containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus.

• Experience with open source contributions is a plus.

• Passion for building impactful products in healthcare.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $120,000 – $250,000 USD annually. Visa sponsorship is available.

Location

On-site, five days per week in San Francisco, CA.
