American Terawatt is building a new industrial electric grid for the United States. Power systems engineering is at the core of what we do.
We design and deploy advanced power transmission systems, serving large industrial loads, hundreds of megawatts at a time. Our systems deliver electric power to everything from frontier AI datacenters to highly automated manufacturing, refineries, mines, and more.
We make interconnection fast, simple, and cheap. On our network, generation owners get their projects online faster, delivering abundant power at competitive prices.
The backbone of American Terawatt’s network is based on long-distance HVDC transmission, anchored by software-defined ‘Macrogrids’ which actively manage local transmission between generation, storage, and loads.
The Role
As a power systems engineer at American Terawatt, you will:
Develop Macrogrid hardware to handle rapid, large power transients, switch seamlessly between generation sources and storage, and protect generators, transmission hardware, and sensitive loads like AI chips. Your designs will scale to dozens of sites across the country and connect to our HVDC transmission network.
Design American Terawatt’s large-scale, long-distance HVDC network, connecting Macrogrids around the country. Your designs will ensure that the network runs safely, efficiently, and reliably, while simplifying interconnection and scaling rapidly.
Engineer custom transmission components to simplify, scale, and accelerate our deployments, while reducing costs and supply-chain risks, and increasing our iteration speed.
Perform modeling and testing including short-circuit and coordination studies, grounding and arc-flash analysis to test the feasibility of designs before deployment, and assess lifecycle performance and resiliency strategies (e.g. N+1, 2N, islanding/black-start capability).
Work directly with suppliers to ensure availability of COTS hardware for our R&D, as well as the scaled deliverability of our designs.
Own and manage relationships with engineering counterparts at EPC firms to ensure that projects are designed and constructed to spec. Work with these teams to resolve technical challenges in the field.
Experience
We are hiring across a variety of experience levels for this role. At least 3+ years of commercial engineering experience is required.
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
Demonstrated commercial experience in power systems engineering or related electrical engineering, with direct experience designing for high-voltage applications.
Hands-on experience with power systems modeling and simulation tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or equivalent) including short-circuit, coordination, load flow, and arc-flash studies.
Experience in the full engineering lifecycle from concept, to design, development, testing, deployment, and commissioning of a functioning commercial system.
Preferred Experience
Experience with grid interconnection processes, utility coordination, and applicable codes and standards (NEC, NERC, IEEE, ANSI).
Background in data center or other high-density compute power infrastructure, or exposure to AI infrastructure or hyperscale facility development.
Hands-on familiarity with DC transmission architectures.
