info
  • Bedrock is seeking Senior and Staff Software Engineers to develop embedded safety controller software for autonomous heavy machinery.
  • Candidates should have experience in building embedded systems in robotics or safety-critical contexts, with strong skills in C++ or Rust and fluency in Python.
  • The role involves creating safety-critical software that ensures reliable operation of machines in harsh environments and requires a solid understanding of real-time systems.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience with Rust in production and familiarity with functional safety standards like ISO 26262.
  • The position offers a competitive salary, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is required.

Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world

At Bedrock, we're moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team includes veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we're deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country, improving safety on job sites and accelerating schedules on critical infrastructure projects.

We're not here debating the future of AI. We're deploying it in the real world. In just two years, we've raised $350M and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction.

This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You'll work alongside construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch. If you're ready to do meaningful work on hard problems, we'd love to have you join us.

The Role

The Onboard Infrastructure team builds the software foundation Bedrock's autonomous machines run on, the layer giving Bedrock the ability to scale across multiple machines, variations, models and environments. Our software keeps every machine working reliably hours from the nearest engineer, in harsh environments and on lossy connectivity, doing real work on billion-dollar projects.

We're looking for Senior and Staff Software Engineers to architect, build, and own major areas of our embedded safety controller, from drivers and RTOS bring-up through applications and system integration. This mixed-criticality controller serves as the main interface between the Bedrock autonomy system and the heavy machinery it controls.

In this role, you will:

  • Build safety-critical software that controls the base machine and monitors the health of the Bedrock system, with strict isolation and deterministic real-time execution.

  • Develop across the full embedded software stack, spanning drivers, RTOS, communication, middleware, and applications.

  • Interface with and control a broad range of heavy machinery across machine types and manufacturers, and design the abstractions that keep our system flexible and portable.

  • Extend the platform to the embedded devices that keep machines running in the field, like power management, sensor cleaning, and lighting, so the system can keep working through long stretches in harsh conditions.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience building and shipping embedded systems in robotics, automotive, drones, or other safety-critical embedded contexts.

  • Strong embedded programming skills in a systems language such as C++ or Rust, plus fluency in Python for scripting and analysis.

  • Solid foundation building software for resource constrained systems with real-time requirements.

  • Comfortable developing, automating, and debugging across the hardware/software boundary.

  • Track record of leading projects, driving design decisions, and working effectively across hardware, autonomy, and platform teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Rust in production or embedded systems

  • Familiarity with automotive and industrial networking and protocols including CAN, Ethernet, and J1939.

  • Experience developing software to meet functional safety standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or DO-178C.

Our roles are often flexible. If you don't fit all the criteria, or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY), please apply anyway! We'd love to consider you.
