Position Overview: 

The High School Assistant Principal is responsible for leading and guiding an academic culture in the high school that fosters joy in learning, deep intellectual engagement, support for a variety of learning styles, and a myriad of opportunities for student self-reflection about interests and passions. This position reports directly to the High School Principal and works in close collaboration with the student advisors, college and personal counselors, learning specialists, academic program coordinators, faculty, and support staff. The High School Assistant Principal serves as a member of the high school administrative team and is involved in many aspects of program delivery and management. Assignments will vary considerably including, but not limited to: running student course selection, hosting parent education about our academic program, conducting classroom observations and engaging with teacher coaching, holding student accountability and enforcing discipline around academic integrity, encouraging a culture of intellectual curiosity and joy in learning, supporting instructional programs, organizing schedule and rosters, and developing and implementing academic policy.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Fosters and guides a learning culture full of joy, curiosity, and resilience
  • Oversees the arc of student academic development in the high school as students build skills, reflect on their learning, and select pathways for their future
  • Nourishes a culture of academic integrity and respect for the opinions and ideas of others
  • Maintains a culture of student accountability on academic policies, especially around late work, academic integrity, and school reentry after long absence or medical leave
  • Maintains a culture of teacher accountability on academic policies, clarity of expectations for students, and regular feedback on student work 
  • Oversees and coordinates academic programs, including:
    • Our schedule design and course selection process, including student and parent education about our academic program
    • Our use of our learning management system and student records database to communicate about student academic progress and outcomes, including carefully maintained student transcripts
    • Our internal and external student exams, in compliance with policies and guidelines, while serving student needs as thoughtfully as possible
    • Teacher professional growth and development through observation, feedback, and professional learning communities
  • Supports the High School Principal in overseeing the student learning experience and administering our academic programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the High School Principal

 

Education/Qualifications

  •  

    Licenses and Certificates: 

  • Grade 9-12 teaching experience
  • High School administrative school leadership experience 
  • MA in Education or Educational Leadership desirable
  • Skills and Abilities:

  • A well-developed knowledge of secondary education and adolescent development
  • Strong problem-solving skills that take into account a wide range of needs in a multicultural, multilingual environment
  • Excellent human relations and communications skills to convey information to parents, students, staff, and other institutions in a friendly, consistent, and clear manner
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, complex environment and to meet schedules and timelines, despite frequent interruptions and distractions 
  • Comfort with standard software applications, education databases and web-based reporting solutions, and able to learn new applications and search out appropriate technology tools as needed
  • Capacity to deal with sensitive communications and maintain confidentiality
  • A good sense of humor
  • Knowledge and command of French or another language other than English is a plus, though not required

 

This is a full-time, salaried position reporting to the High School Principal. Salary range is $110,000 - $130,000 depending on experience.
