About Check
Payroll is broken. It's still running on decades-old infrastructure. We're rebuilding it.
We don't run payroll ourselves — we power the businesses that do. As the inventors of embedded payroll, we're redefining how people get paid and making it easier for those businesses to launch, grow, and thrive.
On our team, you'll use creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and grit to simplify the complexity of payroll for thousands of employers of every size, across all industries. We ignore conventional role boundaries in favor of the unique strengths and values each builder brings to our mission: make paying people simple. Check out our origin story!
Check is far more than just API infrastructure. We’re a springboard for building and scaling payroll businesses. See how it works for our partners.
The team and role
At Check, our people are our most valuable asset. The People team exists to make sure we have the talent and capacity to deliver on our highest priorities, and that each person we bring on will thrive once they're here. We foster connection and fulfillment across our distributed team, and build the frameworks and mechanisms that enable them to do great work.
Now we're evolving to support the next phase of Check. As People Associate you’ll be a key part of the reinvention of our candidate and employee experience. You'll report to the Head of People and partner closely with the Lead Recruiter and Sr. People Ops Partner in your day-to-day. You’ll work across talent acquisition and people operations as a crucial executional resource, and a force multiplier for both. You'll drive core workflows in recruiting coordination, onboarding, office management, culture and experience, and people ops administration. This role demands a real doer with an eye for detail and a bias toward action.
In this role, you will:
Anchor the SF office as we expand our Bay Area presence. Organize team lunches, IRL events, and the physical space itself: snacks, supplies, vendors, enhancements, and equipment. If/when we outgrow our current space, you’ll own the office move.
Drive candidate scheduling and communication across all interview loops and stages in Ashby. You may run initial screens on select roles, alongside the Lead Recruiter.
Lead the candidate-to-new-hire transition. You’ll manage offer letters, background checks, equipment provisioning, systems access, first-day plans, and new hire "surprise and delight" moments.
Support key HR processes. You’ll help our core People programs run smoothly - you’ll maintain HRIS data hygiene, support audit prep, process review cycle comp changes, and back up the Sr. People Ops Partner on payroll and benefits administration.
Organize events and cultural touchpoints across Check. In the SF office you’ll be the lead on in-person social gatherings, and you'll serve as a resource for leaders across the company who are bringing their teams together for live collaboration and bonding time. You’ll support the Sr. People Ops Partner in planning for our annual company retreat (Chexico), and you'll design thoughtful virtual experiences for our remote team.
Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates will have most or all of the following:
3+ years of directly relevant experience, including hands-on experience with recruiting coordination (scheduling, ATS management, candidate communication) and people operations (payroll/benefits, HRIS administration, office management)
Meticulous process execution, especially within sensitive workflows like onboarding, offboarding, or payroll and benefits processing
Real event planning muscle - you design thoughtful virtual and in-person experiences that have flavor and flare
AI adopter mindset, with AI tools already integrated into your daily workflows
Familiarity with our core People team tech stack: Ashby, Eddy, Notion, Claude Cowork, Checkr, eVerify, Jumpcloud, Allwhere, Employee Navigator, Tilt, Windmill, KnowBe4, Google, Slack
This is an onsite or hybrid role in San Francisco, requiring at least 2 days/week in-office.
Bonus points if you have:
Startup experience, ideally in fintech
Direct experience with payroll processing, comp administration, or benefits workflows
Experience standing up a new office space or coordinating an office move
