About the role

The Commissioning Lead is responsible for leading the technical execution of commissioning activities for mission-critical data center projects across the United States. This role serves as the field and systems subject matter expert, ensuring mechanical, electrical, and controls systems are installed, tested, integrated, and validated according to design intent, operational requirements, and industry standards.


The Commissioning Lead works closely with construction, engineering, QA/QC, operations, contractors, and third-party Commissioning Authorities (CxAs) to support successful project delivery and operational readiness.

What you'll do

  • Commissioning Execution & Technical Leadership
  • Lead day-to-day commissioning activities for mission-critical data center projects.
  • Support development and execution of commissioning plans, procedures, checklists, and testing protocols.
  • Coordinate startup, functional performance testing (FPT), and integrated systems testing (IST) activities.
  • Ensure all systems are commissioned in accordance with project requirements, design specifications, and operational objectives.

System Testing & Validation

  • Lead commissioning efforts for mechanical, electrical, controls, and critical infrastructure systems.
  • Review test scripts, procedures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Validate system functionality, reliability, and performance under normal and failure-mode operating conditions.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve system deficiencies during commissioning activities.

Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with commissioning standards, quality requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Partner with QA/QC teams to track and resolve commissioning issues and deficiency items.
  • Verify completion of pre-functional and functional testing requirements prior to project turnover.

Field Coordination & Collaboration

  • Act as the primary technical liaison between contractors, vendors, Commissioning Authorities, engineering teams, and project stakeholders.
  • Coordinate commissioning schedules and testing activities with construction and project teams.
  • Support operational readiness and turnover activities with facility operations teams.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain commissioning documentation, test results, issue logs, and turnover records.
  • Review commissioning reports and ensure accuracy of testing documentation.
  • Provide regular updates on commissioning progress, risks, and outstanding issues.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of commissioning experience within data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial plants, or complex infrastructure environments.
  • Experience leading field commissioning, startup, and testing activities for MEP and controls systems.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, controls, and critical facility infrastructure systems.
  • Experience with functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, and system troubleshooting.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and sequence-of-operations documentation.
  • Knowledge of commissioning processes, industry standards, and mission-critical facility best practices.
  • Strong technical leadership and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and contractors without direct managerial authority.
