Overview
Lumentum is seeking an Optical Module Design & Simulation Intern to support high-density interconnect module development for advanced optical communication systems.
This internship is designed as a conversion-track opportunity, intended to identify and develop high-potential candidates for potential full-time Optical Engineering roles in San Jose upon graduation (subject to business needs and performance).
You will contribute to real product development efforts, combining advanced optical modeling with hands-on laboratory validation to influence next-generation module designs.
This role is onsite in San Jose, California.
Responsibilities
As an intern, you will:
- Perform optical simulations and modeling to support high-density interconnect module design
- Analyze optical performance including loss mechanisms, coupling efficiency, and signal integrity
- Develop and refine simulation models to support design optimization
- Conduct hands-on laboratory testing and characterization of optical components and subsystems
- Correlate modeling results with experimental data and propose design improvements
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams
- Prepare technical documentation and present findings to senior engineers
You will be assigned meaningful technical ownership with structured mentorship from experienced optical engineers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master’s or PhD degree in:
- Optical Engineering
- Physics
- Electrical Engineering
- Photonics or related field
- Strong academic foundation in:
- Laser fundamentals
- Photodetectors
- Fiber optic communication principles
- Electromagnetic wave propagation or optical physics
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with optical simulation or modeling tools
- Familiarity with optical alignment and characterization methods
- Experience working in a research laboratory environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to bridge theoretical modeling with experimental validation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Quick learner and can easily adapt to change

Pay Range: $27.75 - 54.30/hour USD
