Job Summary: 

An SMT Operator Level 2 (Swing Shift) is a skilled technician who can independently manage and operate the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) line with minimal supervision during swing-shift hours. They have a deeper understanding of the SMT process than a Level 1 operator and are responsible for setting up, monitoring, and troubleshooting production runs 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Complete SMT line setup: Independently set up all machines in the SMT line, including the screen printer, pick-and-place machines, and reflow oven.
  • Process SMT runs: Operate the SMT machines during production, adjust conveyor belts, manage production alarms, and perform shutdowns.
  • Load and manage materials: Use a load list or setup sheet to accurately load feeders with the correct components and restock parts as needed.
  • Handle machine adjustments: Make minor machine adjustments, such as correcting component placement, package sizes, and clearing machine jams.
  • Execute changeovers: Efficiently perform line changeovers for different products in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Verify materials: Check component and feeder part numbers against the Bill of Materials (BOM) to ensure the correct parts are used.
  • Follow industry standards: Ensure all work meets quality standards, such as IPC-A-610, for the acceptability of electronic assemblies.
  • Use specialized knowledge: Correctly handle moisture-sensitive devices (MSDs) and follow electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions.
  • Troubleshoot issues: Diagnose and resolve standard equipment and process issues to minimize production downtime.
  • Provide support: Work with technicians and engineers to resolve more complex quality and production problems.
  • Make minor program edits: Understand the basics of machine programming to make simple adjustments or corrections to an existing program.
  • Complete production logs: Keep accurate records of production activities, including performance, yield rates, defects, and machine downtime.
  • Follow work instructions: Meticulously follow manufacturing instructions, schematics, and process sheets.
  • Communicate effectively: Clearly communicate production status, issues, and shift updates to management, maintenance, and other operators.
  • Perform preventive maintenance: Execute routine daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning and maintenance tasks on SMT equipment based on assigned schedules.
  • Assist in training: Help train less experienced or junior operators on machine operation and standard procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience): 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2-4 years of SMT operator experience
  • Understanding of SMT equipment operation
  • Ability to identify different electronic components.
  • Basic knowledge of the printing and soldering processes.
  • Adherence to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Familiarity with reading blueprints, diagrams, and processing documentation.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions in English
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
