Position: Manager, Environmental Health and Safety
Report to Title: Vice President, Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability
Location:Â Onsite- Sandersville, GA

Position Overview:
Safety and Environmental Manger, responsible for the development, coordination and management of effective company safety and environmental program in a lean environment. Develops behavior-based safety learning and training. Manages Safety Captain Program.Â
Area of Focus:
Safety and Environmental Manger demonstrates professional and community involvement and leadership both within the safety and environmental field and the community.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinates the safety programs to ensure a safe environment consistent with regulatory, environmental, and company requirements and needsÂ
- Promotes the company mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives by formulating plans, procedures, and objectives for safety programs and by evaluating effectiveness of the programÂ
- Creates and maintains a work environment that encourages open communication and positive employee relations to establish a climate of openness and trustÂ
- Seeks out opportunities for staff involvement and innovation to promote employee creativity and to generate ideas to improve functions, devise solutions, and implement plans
- Operates and maintains water treatment and wastewater equipment, ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental protection limits
- Prepares reports and maintains logs for water treatment systems on meter readings, tests, chemical and equipment usage, and all other record-keeping requirementsÂ
- Build a cohesive team with the skills necessary to successfully meet the departmental/company objectives and strategiesÂ
- Communicates training information in a formal classroom setting, and conducts on-the-job training on various safety and environmental programsÂ
- Keeps various safety and environmental records and logbooks up to dateÂ
- Works with medical department to follow high-cost or precedent-setting workers’ compensation casesÂ
- Is required to assist with cost-control efforts, and participate in manufacturing improvement committees
- Interfaces with OSHA, and various environmental programs inspectorsÂ
- Study, plan and formulate new and revised safety programs, JSA’s, and rules: prepare recommendations and implement for conformanceÂ
- Responsible for effective application of safety and environmental policies and practices and to investigate and eliminate hazardous conditions and unsafe practicesÂ
- Through safety and environmental training sessions, meetings, manuals, bulletins, films, etc., keep supervisory personnel apprised of hazardous conditions and practices, recommend injury prevention measuresÂ
- Studies work operations, details of nature of the work, materials and equipment used, products and byproducts, and employee workforce profile
- Industrial hygiene studies may involve exposure to dust, fumes, mists, gases, vapors, noise, heat, and coldÂ
- Â Assesses new developments in the safety and environmental field that may have application to the company's operationsÂ
- Keeps apprised of developments in federal and state safety and applicable environmental laws likely to affect the companyÂ
- Coordinates safety and industrial hygiene to obtain optimum service with insurance carriersÂ
- Investigates serious injuries/incidents in conjunction with line and staff personnel, Human Resources and Occupational Health NurseÂ
- Assists line and staff management to understand OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance on handling OSHA compliance, inspections and citationsÂ
- Manages and maintains appropriate permitting requirementsÂ
- Supervises approximately 4 (hourly) direct reports and (1) salaried non-exemptÂ
- Evaluates performance, provides feedback, and completes performance reviewsÂ
- Supervises and trains light technical and hourly personnel in performing supporting tasks
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, or related field or equivalent experienceÂ
- 8-10 years’ experienceÂ
- Working knowledge of safety regulations, OSHA, EPA, hazardous materials, and emergency preparednessÂ
- Willingness to travel between GA plants on an occasional basisÂ
- Proficient with Microsoft Word Excel, PowerPoint and AccessÂ
- Effective written and verbal communication skills are essentialÂ
Preferred Qualifications:Â
- Bilingual in SpanishÂ
- CSP and/or CIHÂ
- First aid/CPR instructorÂ
- Forklift instructor certifiedÂ
- Successful completion of, and hold certificates in, courses such as hazmat technician and emergency responder, water treatment operation, and other safety and environmental topics
