Title: Clinical Laboratory Assistant/Courier

Department: Laboratory

Status: Full-Time, 40 hours per week

Hours: Hours may be adjusted in response to workload demands. Low census may be utilized in accordance with hospital policy.

Job summary: 

Under the overall direction of the Laboratory Director and the Laboratory Medical Director, the Clinical Laboratory Assistant/Courier is responsible for the performance of phlebotomy procedures, processing of all lab specimens, routine clerical duties, and cleaning of laboratory equipment as necessary. This role is responsible for accurate specimen handling, timely delivery, and providing clear education to staff and patients on proper specimen collection procedures to ensure compliance, specimen integrity, and optimal testing outcomes. In addition to phlebotomy duties, this role transports specimens, supplies, and related materials between collection sites, laboratories, and healthcare facilities to ensure timely processing and continuity of care.

Qualifications/Position Requirements:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  2. Must possess a valid driver's license and meet the insurability requirements of the company's vehicle insurance carrier.
  3. Must be able to read and write English.
  4. Math skills required.
  5. Certification in Phlebotomy preferred.
  6. Past laboratory experience preferred.
  7. Familiarity with medical/laboratory terminology preferred.
  8. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and the ability to travel between sites as needed in MHS vehicle.
  9. Ability to safely transport specimens and supplies while following all confidentiality and chain-of-custody procedures.
  10. Ability to type 30 WPM accurately.
  11. Ability to operate or learn to operate basic office equipment.
  12. Ability to establish effective working relationships and effective communication with peers, patients, families, providers, and all other support hospital & external personnel.
  13. Ability to organize and use time efficiently and effectively.
