POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, this position is responsible for assuring the safety of all those in the pool area by being at their assigned lifeguard station, alert, enforcing all pool rules, and complying with other duties as assigned, including but not limited to instructing lessons and conducting programs in accordance with the purposes and policies of the Association. The lifeguard ensures a safe environment and high-quality service to all members, parents, children, guests, staff, and volunteers.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Ensure the safety of all participants by vigilantly monitoring pool activities and enforcing all YMCA aquatics rules and policies.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies using rescue techniques and first aid/CPR as trained and certified.
  • Conduct regular safety checks of the pool area, equipment, and facilities to prevent accidents and maintain a clean and hazard-free environment. Report any hazards or problems to Director immediately
  • Perform opening, closing, and routine maintenance duties, including water testing, equipment inspection, and pool area cleanliness.
  • Maintain accurate records, including incident reports, attendance, chemical logs, and shift checklists.
  • Provide excellent customer service by greeting members, answering questions, and promoting a welcoming and inclusive environment. Educate participants regarding rules and regulations of pool area.
  • Participate in regular in-service training sessions and maintain current certifications in lifeguarding, CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • Participate in scheduled and random lifeguard drills
  • Model the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all interactions.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swift in an emergency situation
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations and apply appropriate policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned needs to be included to all role

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (must crossover to YMCA within 6 months)
  • Current First Aid certification (First Aid for Public Safety Personnel within 11 months) and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute
  • Must pass written and practical skills exam prior to duty
  • Current CPR PRO/AED and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
    • American Red Cross
    • American Heart Association or
    • American Safety & Health Institute

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs, squat, kneel, and bend for extended periods while on duty.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs safely.
