The Fire Sprinkler Design Assistant/Apprentice position is responsible for assisting the design team. This includes picking up permits and dropping permits off at various job sites. A Fire Sprinkler Design Assistant supports the creation of fire suppression layouts and ensures systems meet safety codes like NFPA 13. This role serves as a bridge between a trainee and a full Fire Sprinkler Designer.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Drive to various locations to pick up plans.
- Assist Design team as needed in day-to-day operations.
- Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of departmental files.
- Receives, records, and distributes forms and permits as needed.
- Technical Drafting: Utilizing software like AutoCAD, AutoSprink, or HydraCAD to create 2D and 3D sprinkler layouts.
- Hydraulic Calculations: Assisting in determining water flow and pressure requirements to ensure the system can effectively suppress a fire.
- Document Management: Organizing architectural blueprints and "as-built" drawings for project coordination.
- Code Compliance: Verifying that designs adhere to local building codes, insurance requirements, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
- Material Listing: Generating "stock lists" of pipes, fittings, and sprinklers needed for the installation crew.
- Perform other duties assigned by management.
Education/Qualification:
- Must have experience with CAD software essentials.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Associates degree in drafting or engineering preferred.
- Certification: Many assistants work toward NICET certification (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies), which is the industry standard for career advancement.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to function well in a high-paced environment.
- Must have clean driving record.
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to wear PPE such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, steel toe shoes, and/or fall protection.
- Ability to stand and walk on uneven surfaces in construction and/or heavy industrial sites, climb ladders or and stairs.
- Basic understanding of office equipment.
- Ability to work independently and identify and solve problems.

Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands or arms.
