The annual salary range for this position is $165,000- 180,000 based on experience. Relocation support is available.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer will serve as a strategic thought partner and hands-on financial leader, overseeing all aspects of Housing Matters' financial operations. As a member of the Executive Team, you'll have a voice in organization-wide strategy and help ensure financial decisions and resources remain closely aligned with Housing Matters' mission, priorities, and long-term goals.
You'll lead the finance team and partner closely with the CEO, Executive Team, and Board committees to bring clarity and insight to complex financial decisions. From budgeting and forecasting to grants, contracts, audits, and cash flow, you'll provide the financial leadership that allows Housing Matters to plan confidently for what's ahead. Just as importantly, you'll have the opportunity to strengthen the systems, policies, and practices behind the work - building a financial operation that can continue to evolve alongside the organization.
Position Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the Executive Team, bringing financial insight and strategic perspective to organization-wide planning and decision-making.
- Partner with the CEO and Executive Team to lead annual budgeting and planning, monitor performance, and ensure leadership has a clear and timely view of the organization's financial position.
- Oversee financial, project, program, and grants accounting while ensuring accurate and timely internal and external financial reporting.
- Lead the annual audit process, partnering with external auditors and the Board's Audit Committee and implementing necessary improvements.
- Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting and serve as the primary contact for banking relationships.
- Build and maintain strong financial, contract management, billing, collection, and reporting systems that support operational needs and consistent cash flow.
- Strengthen accounting policies, practices, internal controls, and finance department procedures to support an effective and scalable financial operation.
- Support regulatory compliance and help the organization proactively navigate financial risk.
- Serve as staff liaison to the Finance and Administration Committee of the Board of Directors and effectively communicate critical financial matters to Board leadership.
- Provide financial reporting and insight for donor audiences and other key stakeholders.
- Lead and develop the finance team, creating an environment of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in strategic planning that helps Housing Matters remain responsive to the changing housing-as-healthcare environment.
What you will bring:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- At least 10 years of overall professional experience, ideally including 6+ years of broad financial operations management experience.
- Nonprofit financial management experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, audit coordination, budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
- Demonstrated knowledge of fund accounting and grants management.
- Experience developing and maintaining effective financial controls, policies, and procedures.
- Strong leadership and management capabilities with the ability to partner effectively across an organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex financial information for executive and Board audiences.
- Experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and other technology platforms.
- Sage Intacct accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of the barriers to housing faced by individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Santa Cruz County is valued.
Preferred Experience:
- MBA, CPA, or related advanced degree.
