ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES:
The Academic Advisor for Student Athletes provides comprehensive, preemptive academic advising and student success support for all student athletes interested in pursuing degree programs at Lackawanna College. This position provides expertise to new and continuing student athletes in such functions as developing academic plans, identifying and supporting at risk student athletes, and collaborating with faculty, staff, and athletics to advance student retention, progression, and completion. The Academic Advisor for Student Athletes is expected to exercise independent judgment while working across diverse populations of student athletes on their academic and athletic journey. The position will work out of the Scranton office and may require occasional evening and/or weekend availability.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide comprehensive academic advising to new and continuing student athletes by exercising professional judgment to clarify educational goals, recommend programs of coursework, and guide students toward timely degree completion.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individual academic plans for assigned and at-risk student athletes, utilizing data, early alert systems, and proactive intervention strategies to support persistence and retention.
- Maintain knowledge of institutional, conference, and NCAA requirements related to financial aid, academic eligibility, and intercollegiate competition, and support programs and strategic plans of the Athletic Department designed to assure the academic integrity of the athletic programs to promote student-athlete welfare.
- Analyze performance, engagement, and progression data of student-athletes at the student and team level each semester to support persistence and retention.
- Communicate effectively and independently with new and returning student-athletes regarding advising expectations, academic and athletic policies, registration timelines, and required academic actions through multiple communication modalities.Â
- Contribute to the design, coordination, and implementation of advising and retention initiatives for student athletes by collaborating with athletics, faculty, and staff to identify academic risk factors, coordinate interventions, and contribute to a holistic, institution-wide approach to student success.
- Monitor student-athletes’ compliance with academic eligibility criteria and inform appropriate stakeholders of consequences or interventions when necessary and collaborate in determining student-athlete eligibility for continued participation based on academic progress and compliance to encourage continued enrollment and degree completion for student-athletes.
- Regularly evaluate academic advising and support practices, gather stakeholder feedback, and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Promote and facilitate positive relationships between faculty and student-athletes by monitoring and responding to early alert systems to identify student-athletes who need additional support.
- Serve on assigned institutional and departmental committees, contributing to support student success, advising effectiveness, and organizational goals.Â
- Prepare and submit end-of-semester reports summarizing student-athlete academic performance, retention outcomes, interventions, and program effectiveness.
- Facilitate College 101 sessions as required.
- Maintain availability to meet institutional advising demands during peak academic cycle milestones, including (but not limited to) annual forum, graduation, orientations, the week prior to the start of the semester, the first two weeks of the semester, the last two weeks of the semester prior to finals, and advising periods.
- Perform other professional duties consistent with the scope and level of this position in support of advising, retention, and student success objectives.

- Ability to collaborate with coaches and instructors to support student-athlete academic success to promote healthy, productive relationships along faculty and student athletes.
- Proven initiative and problem-solving skills.

EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree required in education, student development, or related field preferred.Â
EXPERIENCE:
- Advising experience in higher education or experience working with at-risk student populations.
- Prior experience working with student athletes preferred.
- Documented experience with database and LMS programs, and ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve a common goal.
