The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for aĀ Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) LeadĀ with theĀ Transfusion Services LaboratoryĀ at Harborview Medical Center (HMC).Ā Ā 

Ā 

HMC is the only designated LevelĀ 1 adultĀ and pediatric trauma and burn center in Washington state. We provide exemplary patient care, especially to vulnerable and underserved populations. Our Transfusion Services Laboratory (TSL) respondsĀ immediatelyĀ to devastating situations in which blood components are needed for patients in the ER and OR. Our lab is unique in that we respond to traumas and massive bleeds around the hospital with a refrigerator of blood components. In terms of clinical testing,Ā we perform tube and automated type and screens, crossmatching, basic antibody identification, transfusion reactionĀ workupsĀ andĀ elutions.Ā We also provide blood components for five different ambulance supervisors and eight helicopter/fixed wing Airlift Northwest bases. Additionally, TSL is heavily involved with clinical trials, primarily focused on whole blood versus component therapy in adults and pediatric patients.Ā 

Ā 

The MLS Lead performsĀ clinical laboratory testingĀ used in the screening, diagnosing, andĀ treating ofĀ pathological conditions. Testing is performed at a professional level and may include allĀ facetsĀ of pretransfusion testing using both automated and manual methods, routine and complex antibody identification,Ā componentĀ preparation, unit confirmation testing,Ā shippingĀ and receiving units and tissue, sample processing, information processing, and quality control. The MLS Lead may respond to trauma codes andĀ facilitateĀ and deliver blood products to the bedside. This role also includes training students and new employees in the performance of such testing.Ā Ā

The MLS Lead is also responsible for daily operations in the clinical Transfusion Services Laboratory. This role regularly assigns, instructs, and checks the work of others. They also lead the professional technical work performed by Medical Lab Scientists. In conjunction withĀ theĀ manager, the MLS Lead provides direction,Ā trainingĀ and leadership for staff, develops and evaluates new methodologies and procedures, and writes,Ā reviewsĀ and revises technical procedures.Ā Ā

WhatĀ you’llĀ contribute:Ā 

Technical Quality of WorkĀ 

  • Perform and oversee testing of blood and blood products in the transfusion service laboratories. Assigned areas may include pretransfusion testing, routine and complex antibody identification procedures, andĀ componentĀ preparation.Ā Ā 

  • Review and evaluate test results; use expert job knowledge to make critical judgmentsĀ regardingĀ acceptability of results and donor compatibility for transfusion.Ā 

  • Develop and evaluate new processes, methods, reagents, or instrumentation in conjunction withĀ managerĀ and faculty.Ā 

  • Work with attention to detailĀ and withĀ critical review to avoid errors.Ā 

  • Correlate abnormal results with pathologic and physiologic states toĀ determineĀ validity and reasonableness of data.Ā Ā 

  • IdentifyĀ the technical,Ā instrumentalĀ orĀ physiologicĀ cause of abnormal results or problems.Ā 

  • Serve as a resource for other personnel in investigating and solving problems.Ā 

  • TakeĀ appropriate actionĀ on critical,Ā abnormalĀ or unusual results.Ā Ā Ā 

  • As needed, consult with faculty,Ā residentsĀ or patient care providers concerning unusual results.Ā 

Ā 

Teamwork/Enable Laboratory OperationsĀ 

  • Provide leadership and oversight toĀ section.Ā 

  • Demonstrate positive leadership skills such as empathy,Ā creativityĀ and fairness.Ā 

  • Regularly assign,Ā instructĀ and check the work of staff and students.Ā 

  • Establish priorities in daily work to be done inĀ section.Ā 

  • Monitor workflow and distribute resources to meet the needs of the laboratory; consult with manager about staffing requirements.Ā 

  • Promote understanding and support for divisional and departmental policies.Ā 

  • Display leadership and flexibility in adapting to new routines and modifications of work assignments and schedules.Ā 

  • Actively model and encourage staff participation in problem solving and quality improvement activities.Ā Ā 

  • Share responsibility for emergency coverage, overtime, on-callĀ and call-back needs of the laboratory.Ā 

  • Inventory supplies and consumables andĀ submitĀ orders for approval. MayĀ assistĀ in negotiation of prices andĀ arranging ofĀ standing orders, serviceĀ contractsĀ and capital equipment purchases.Ā

Quality Assurance ActivitiesĀ 

  • Oversee quality assurance activities within the section, including QC and instrument maintenance.Ā 

  • Maintain laboratory procedures, including writing new procedures and revising existing procedures under the direction of faculty and manager.Ā 

  • Review quality assurance reports to confirm standards of care are being met.Ā 

  • Review quality control reports on a regular basis to detect shifts or trendsĀ indicatingĀ potential problems, and institute corrective action before major problems develop.Ā 

  • Document, report and review results on CAP and otherĀ proficiencyĀ testing materials.Ā 

  • In conjunction withĀ theĀ manager, assess, initiate,Ā maintain,Ā andĀ monitorĀ compliance with CAP and JCAHO regulations within the section.Ā 

Ā 

Instrumentation/Computer SkillsĀ 

  • ExerciseĀ expertiseĀ in operation and troubleshooting of a variety of laboratory equipment, including equipment requiring interpretative knowledge such as multi-parameter cell counters and automated coagulation analyzers.Ā 

  • Perform or oversee calibration, QC and preventive maintenance activities of staff members and instrument repair technicians.Ā 

  • EffectivelyĀ utilizeĀ supervisory functions in laboratory information system software.Ā 

  • EffectivelyĀ utilizeĀ computer systems, including email and statistical software, to perform work duties and training activities.Ā 

  • Assure instrument and computer interface QA requirements are fulfilled.Ā
