Job Description

The Department of Genome Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a TemporaryResearch Scientist 2 in the Fowler Lab. This is an annual position with funding for up to two years. 

About this opportunity: We are a diverse, driven group developing cutting-edge genomic technologies to quantify the effects of genetic variation at scale, engineer genomes and understand cellular function. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the team. Working with Dr. Fowler and other members of the lab, this position (Payroll Title: Pro Staff Temp Position (E S)) will drive ongoing projects and explore new ones by performing experiments, developing assays and analyzing data. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently and taking on leadership roles. The Fowler lab is strongly committed to equity and diversity. The Department of Genome Sciences, part of the University of Washington School of Medicine, focuses on answering critical scientific questions by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches. In particular, we are making major contributions in the application of genomics to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and wellbeing. Genome Sciences boasts a collaborative, integrated environment supported by a diversity of academic disciplines. We also work with a multitude of others both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has been highly successful, expanding since its beginning in 2001 to 63 training, teaching, and research faculty with annual grant awards of $39M in FY25.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform standard microorganism and human cell line culture and molecular biology techniques – 30%

  • Drive ongoing projects and explore new ones by performing experiments and developing assays – 25%

  • Analyze data and troubleshoot experiments, both independently and as part of a team – 20%

  • Participate in training new lab members – 5%

  • Provide written and oral status reports to the Principal Investigator – 5%

  • Contribute to journal articles and figures as requested - 5%

  • Participate in lab meetings, including presentation of work - 5%

  • Perform related duties as required - 5%

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, or a related field. Two years of related, professional laboratory experience to include:

  • Demonstrated ability to execute contemporary molecular biology and functional genomics workflows

  • Demonstrated ability to work under Biosafety Level 2 conditions to culture human cell lines

  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute experiments based on published protocols

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with flow cytometry and FACS

  • Experience with library-scale cloning

  • Experience with DNA sequencing technologies

  • Experience with microscopy and image analysis

  • Outstanding academic and professional track record

  • Innovative and analytical thinker, with a disciplined and organized approach

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and driven to grow.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$68,736.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$100,008.00 annual
