Are you passionate about building systems that power global commerce? We're looking for a Software Development Engineer II to join the Prism team within AWS Invoicing - the team responsible for generating, delivering, and ensuring compliance of every invoice that AWS sends to customers worldwide. Our systems handle billions of dollars in revenue, serve customers in 28+ countries, and are rapidly expanding with AI-powered automation and new product offerings.

As an SDE II on this team, you'll own the design and delivery of critical services that generate invoice documents, deliver them via email and APIs, and integrate with government tax portals across the globe. You'll drive technical solutions to complex problems spanning distributed systems, document rendering, regulatory compliance, and machine learning - all at massive scale. This is a rare opportunity to own software that directly impacts AWS's ability to do business in every country it operates in.

The pace is steady, the problems are real, and you'll end most days knowing you shipped something that matters to customers paying their AWS bills around the world.

Key job responsibilities
- Design and deliver end-to-end solutions: Own the design, implementation, testing, and deployment of features and services within the invoicing platform. Drive technical decisions on architecture, API design, and system integration for your project area.
- Own and operate critical systems: Take full ownership of major components or services within the platform (e.g., invoice rendering pipeline, multi-country delivery orchestration, government portal integrations). Ensure high availability, scalability, and operational excellence through monitoring, alarming, and runbook development.
- Drive technical improvements: Identify areas for technical debt reduction, performance optimization, and architectural improvement. Propose and execute on solutions that raise the bar for the team's systems.
- Lead projects from ambiguous requirements to delivery: Translate business and compliance requirements into technical designs. Write design documents, solicit feedback, and drive implementation across sprints with minimal guidance.
- Mentor and grow teammates: Provide constructive code reviews, help onboard new engineers, and mentor junior SDEs. Raise the team's engineering bar through best practices in testing, deployment, and system design.
- Ensure quality at scale: Define testing strategies for your project area. Build and maintain test automation (unit, integration, end-to-end) that validates invoice correctness across thousands of regulatory scenarios.
- Respond to and resolve production issues: Lead incident response during on-call rotations. Perform root cause analysis, drive corrective actions, and implement preventative measures to reduce recurrence.
- Collaborate across teams and organizations: Partner with product managers, compliance experts, tax PoCs across the globe, and adjacent teams to define requirements, resolve ambiguity, and deliver integrated solutions. Communicate technical trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

About the team
The Prism team sits within AWS Invoicing and owns the end-to-end lifecycle of invoice artifacts - from creation to delivery to government reporting. We're a Seattle-based team of ~12 engineers who care deeply about reliability, compliance, and customer experience. Our systems generate millions of invoices, send delivery notifications, and report to tax authorities in dozens of countries.

We're in an exciting growth phase: expanding e-invoicing to 28+ countries, building an "Invoicing as a Service" platform for other Amazon businesses, and investing in AI to automate compliance work. We have a strong mix of senior and junior engineers, and we actively invest in growing SDEs through mentorship, well-scoped projects, and a culture of learning.

We share knowledge openly within team - encouraging a culture of AI experiments towards becoming team case studies, and we encourage engineers to research before building. Whether you're interested in distributed systems, document processing, international regulations, or applied AI, there's room here to explore and own meaningful work. Basic Qualifications: - 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language Preferred Qualifications: - 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
