Job Summary

The Operator will be a key member of the Company’s Operations team, reporting directly to the Operations and Maintenance Manager. The group operates under a flat structure, and the successful candidate will have regular visibility and direct access to the Director of Operations.


The successful candidate will be a critical member of the team, ensuring the successful execution of providing our customers with steam and chilled water on a 24/7/365 basis. Operators work 12-hour shifts alternating every two weeks between days and nights and include weekends. The successful candidate will be expected to work well as part of a team, be a self-starter that enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, have strong commitment to deadlines and team, is process oriented with a high sense of ownership in their work, possesses a high degree of intellectual curiosity, and has a superior knowledge of steam and chilled water systems.


The Shift Operator shall be under the direct supervision of the Shift Engineer and shall assist the engineer in ensuring the safe uninterrupted operation of the company's energy production facilities.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Must perform all duties as assigned by the Shift Engineer.
  • Monitors the plant control system via computer screens.
  • Additional duties include, but not limited to:
  • Starting and stopping plant equipment as needed
  • diagnosing and correcting problems in equipment and auxiliaries
  • changing oil, lubricating bearings and filling station logs.
  • Performance of any maintenance work will be secondary to overall plant operations.
  • Performs other work assigned of equal or lower classifications, if qualified.


Qualifications/Experience

  • Must fulfill the company's qualification requirements for a Shift Operator.
  • Must have sufficient experience and ability to qualify for work as a Shift Operator within a 6-month probation period.
  • Individuals having served in the United States Navy for a period of 4 (four) or more years as boiler technician, machinist's mates, or engineering lab technicians will be considered eligible by the company for a Shift Operator position.
  • Must pass a written examination covering all aspects of plant operations at the company's facility. Exam will be prepared by the company.
  • Must pass an oral systems checkout review board conducted by the company. This review board shall consist of at least one representative from the company and the union.
  • Applicants must be able to sketch from memory the primary piping, valves, equipment and any other essential elements of all plant mechanical systems and should have a working knowledge of the key normal operating parameters of the production facilities.


Education/Licenses/Certificates

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have a City of Seattle Engineer License, Steam Grade 3 Boilers.

Work Environment

  • Requires individuals to bend, kneel, crawl, stoop and stand in confined spaces with elevated temperatures.
  • Requires sitting at computer screens for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work in tight spaces and elevated positions: twisting, turning, bending, and holding arms at / above the head are all common movements; able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Presence of high-pressure steam, water, dirt, and other elements requiring protective clothing.
