Job Description

UW Medicine - Harborview Medical Center Insurance Eligibility and Financial Counseling Services Team (IECS) has an outstanding opportunity for a Patient Financial Counselor.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • 100% FTE (40 hours per week)

  • Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday; 8:00am - 5:00pm

  • Day Shift

  • Hybrid after a 6-month probation period

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • This is an onsite position at Harborview Medical Center for the first 6 months, with potential for transitioning to a hybrid work schedule upon successful completion of the probationary period

  • Participate in interviewing patients to determine appropriate insurance coverage and/or Financial Assistance

  • Refer uninsured patients for Medicaid/Financial eligibility screening

  • Prepare estimates of fees upon request from Patient Care Consultants

  • Review payment options with patients

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interview patients and determine appropriate insurance opportunities

  • Complete applications which include Health Care Exchange, Medicaid, Medicaid Expansion, and Medicare Part D

  • Manage and resolve a high volume of phone inquiries and referrals

  • Manage all aspects of UW Medicine’s Financial Assistance application process

  • Appropriately assess patient’s needs and potential funding and obtain and verify insurance through various web tools

  • Document progress of each case in Epic notes

  • Prepare price estimates and collect payments

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights

  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, or other sensitive materials in printed, electronic, or verbal form

  • Access and use the minimum necessary patient-identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties for authorized purposes only

  • Interpret hospital policies, procedures, and services to patients, patient representatives, and inter/intra-hospital departments and community facilities

  • Perform work that supports patient financial relations, resolution of billing problems, and the financial assessment protocols of UW Medicine

  • Perform other related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED certificate

  • One year of experience in a medical office setting

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements
