GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This is a professional position responsible for this administrative work maintaining and supervising the daily operations of a branch public library.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following statements describe the principal functions of the job and its scope of responsibility but should not be considered an all-inclusive list of work requirements. Â Individuals may perform other duties as assigned.
• Manages the day to day operations of the Highlands Library System.Â
• Responsible for the overall materials collection development for the Highlands Library System.Â
• Provides guidance to the Avon Park Library and Lake Placid Memorial Library Librarians, as needed.Â
• Oversees staff hiring and professional development.Â
• Curates staff training plans on items such as, cataloging and technical services.Â
• Maintains branch library's inventory of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual equipment, and other materials. Â
• Assists groups and individuals in locating and obtaining materials. Â
• Provides general public with information pertaining to library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
• Assists clientele in the use of reference sources, such as card or book catalogs or book and periodical indexes. Â
• Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files. Â
• Assists with shelf location of materials selected. Â
• Completes check-out/check-in procedures and other service related duties.
• Assists in the planning and direction of special projects and library promotions. Â
• Selects and recommends materials for purchase. Â
• Catalogs and classifies new library materials.
• Responds productively to change and performs all other related tasks as required and as directed.
• Maintains a professional and safe unit and work area adhering to established safety policies and the image desired for the organization.
• Follows consistently the Boards policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library procedures. Â
• Knowledge of work methods and techniques related to public service work. Â
• Knowledge of methods required to locate research materials. Â
• Ability to work in harmony with the general public. Â
• Ability to catalog, classify, and file library materials.Â
• Ability to communicate accurately and clearly, both orally and in writing. Â
• Ability to enforce library rules and regulations protecting public safety. Â
• Ability to function independently of a direct supervisor. Â
• Skill in the use of computers and ability to learn new programs as needed.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, supervisors, directors, elected officials, vendors, and the general public.
PHYSICAL SKILLS:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 25% of the time. Â Must be able to inspect and assess daily email and postal mail correspondence. Frequently operates various types of office equipment to include, but not limited to a computer and copy machine. Â Occasionally ascends/descends stairs. Â The individual in this position frequently communicates with the public, vendors and co-workers. Â Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Â Frequently moves materials and office equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. Â Constantly works in an indoor environment. Â Rarely works in inclement outdoor weather conditions. Rarely operates motor vehicle for up to (4) hours continuously or intermittently. Â Must be able to frequently position self to reach files and other office items located on high and low shelves or the floor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an A.L.A. accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Library and Information Science. Â M.L.S. Â or M.L.I.S required. Â A minimum of five (5) year's experience with daily library functions of which two should have been in a supervisory capacity. Â
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License.Â
OTHER JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
        Disaster Essential.
