POSITION SUMMARY:
Metis Technology Solutions, Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Senior Linux and Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to support the Aerospace, Research, Technology, and Simulation (ARTS) contract at NASA Ames Research Center. The position will focus primarily on the engineering, administration, security, automation, and operational support of AWS cloud infrastructure, while also supporting Linux systems and hybrid cloud/on-premise environments used for advanced air traffic management research and simulation.
This position:
- Designs, administers, secures, and troubleshoots production AWS infrastructure across one or more AWS accounts.
- Designs and supports VPC architectures, public and private subnets, routing, security groups, network ACLs, VPN connectivity, and hybrid cloud/on-premise networking.
- Configures and administers EC2, Application and Network Load Balancers, target groups, Route 53, EBS, S3, CloudWatch, and related AWS services.
- Designs and implements IAM roles, trust and permission policies, service access, and least-privilege controls.
- Implements centralized EC2 administration, patching, automation, and compliance using AWS Systems Manager, including Patch Manager, Run Command, Automation, and maintenance windows.
- Develops and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or CloudFormation, with repeatable deployment and configuration practices.
- Supports multi-account AWS environments, including centralized security, operational management, monitoring, and governance.
- Administers and troubleshoots Linux systems, with emphasis on Oracle Linux 8 and Ubuntu.
- Automates cloud and Linux administration using Bash, Python, Ansible, or similar tools.
- Performs performance analysis, capacity planning, backup and recovery, vulnerability remediation, and root-cause analysis.
- Implements infrastructure in accordance with NASA security requirements and applicable NIST security controls.
- Develops and maintains architecture diagrams, system documentation, operating procedures, and configuration documentation.
- Works closely with systems administrators, software developers, researchers, security personnel, and NASA customers to support reliable research computing infrastructure.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Required Skills and knowledge:
- At least 10 years of overall systems, cloud, infrastructure, DevOps, or related engineering experience.
- At least 5 years of substantial recent hands-on AWS infrastructure engineering or administration experience in production environments.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with AWS networking, including VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups, load balancing, DNS/Route 53, and application request routing.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience administering EC2 environments, including deployment, monitoring, patching, troubleshooting, backup/recovery, and operational automation.
- Strong practical knowledge of AWS IAM, including roles, trust policies, permission policies, instance profiles, resource access, and least-privilege design.
- Hands-on experience with AWS Systems Manager for fleet administration, patching, automation, or compliance management.
- Strong Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform and/or CloudFormation in production environments.
- Strong Linux systems administration experience. Oracle Linux 8 and Ubuntu experience is preferred.
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, VPNs, subnets, TLS/HTTPS, and cloud/on-premise network integration.
- Strong Bash, Python, Ansible, or comparable infrastructure automation skills.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and technical documentation skills.
Desired Skills and Knowledge
- Experience administering AWS Organizations or other multi-account AWS environments, including delegated administration and centralized governance.
- Experience designing scalable and highly available AWS architectures using load balancing, horizontal scaling, Auto Scaling, caching, monitoring, and capacity planning.
- Experience supporting hybrid environments integrating AWS with on-premise Linux systems and enterprise networks.
- Experience supporting NASA, DoD, or other federal government computing environments.
- Knowledge of NIST SP 800-53 controls, security benchmarks, vulnerability management, and security audit requirements.
- AWS professional- or specialty-level certification. Certification is valued as supporting evidence but is not a substitute for demonstrated hands-on experience.
- Experience with research computing, simulation, scientific computing, or software-development infrastructure.
- Experience administering Windows Server or VMware environments.
