This role serves as a critical link between clinicians, patients, laboratories, and insurance requirements to ensure specimens are collected accurately and laboratory orders are processed correctly for timely patient care and reimbursement. The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, strong knowledge of laboratory workflows, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to identify and correct laboratory order discrepancies, diagnosis coding issues, and data entry errors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, and specimen collection according to established clinical protocols. Verify patient identity using approved patient identifiers prior to specimen collection. Properly label, process, package, and prepare specimens for transport. Ensure specimen integrity through proper handling, storage, and processing procedures. Monitor collection supplies and notify leadership when inventory replenishment is needed. Follow universal precautions, infection control standards, OSHA, MIOSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA requirements. Educate patients regarding specimen collection requirements, including fasting and preparation instructions. Recognize and respond appropriately to adverse patient reactions during specimen collection. Laboratory Order Entry Accurately enter laboratory orders into the EMR and laboratory information systems. Review clinician orders for completeness and consistency prior to specimen collection. Verify test selection, ordering clinician information, collection dates, and specimen requirements. Ensure laboratory orders are entered in accordance with established workflows and laboratory protocols. Coordinate with clinical staff to obtain clarification on incomplete or conflicting orders. Manage add-on laboratory requests and order modifications as needed. Diagnosis Code Verification and Correction Review diagnosis codes associated with laboratory orders for accuracy and medical necessity. Identify potential diagnosis-to-test mismatches that may result in claim denials or laboratory rejections. Collaborate with clinicians and clinical staff to obtain appropriate supporting diagnoses when necessary. Update diagnosis codes in accordance with clinician documentation and organizational policies. Verify that diagnosis selections support ordered laboratory services and payer requirements. Assist with laboratory claim denial prevention activities through proactive diagnosis validation. Patient Rooming and Clinical Support Room patients, obtain and document vital signs, update medical history, medications, and allergies, and prepare patients for clinician evaluation. Assist with patient care, clinical procedures, documentation, screenings, and care coordination while maintaining compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
