Job Title: Language Technician

Department: Language/Cultural

Reports To: Language Coordinator

Location: Administration Office

Level/Status: Non-Exempt /Full-Time            


SUMMARY

The Language Technician will serve as the project coordinator for the Language in the Living Room program. This position will lead the development of digital language material which will include embedded audio files, applications and assessments. The Language Technician will also provide support to community members learning to use the digital applications. Hours for this position will include some evening and weekend work for workshops, camp and other special events. Travel may be required with this position.    

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) required and one(1) year of experience
  • Demonstrated living knowledge of Anishinabek traditions
  • Familiarity with Anishinabek language and culture 
  • Experience working with Apple products and mobile applications
  • Experience working with youth and families

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Planning, preparation and testing the digitized language curriculum; assist the Language/Culture Director during workshops, camp, ongoing classes and other special events
  • Assist Language/Culture Director with coordinating activities for preservation of language resource material including research, collection and duplication of printed and video/audiotaped materials and digitizing of materials, in cooperation with appropriate Tribal staff, committees and partners
  • Encourage and support participation by the Tribal community in educational and preservation activities
  • Oversee data collection process related to project evaluation
  • Attend Tribal, state and national level meetings, as required
  • Function as part of the Department by covering office duties as needed and interacting with Citizens in both formal and informal settings, building relationships and trust
  • Enhance personal language skills and knowledge
  • Obtains training in language preservation and education, at the direction of Language/Culture Director
  • Help to create, promote and maintain a supportive and nurturing learning environment
  • Maintain confidentiality of all files and accounts of the Language/Culture Program
  • Recognizes and is sensitive to the cultural dimension inherent in Native American communities
  • Participate in community events as required

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality according to Tribal, State and Federal standards and guidelines

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Occasional non-traditional hours including working evenings and weekends as assigned
  • Ability and willingness to travel for work assignments, meetings and continuing education
