Who will you be working with?
You will work closely with Field Operations, Engineering, Aftermarket Services, customers, equipment operators, technicians, vendors, and management teams. This role serves as a key technical resource supporting the reliability and performance of custom-built rail inspection vehicles, ultrasonic testing systems, and proprietary inspection technologies. Collaboration across departments is critical to ensure fleet readiness, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction.
How will you make a difference?
As a member of the Rail Flaw Detection (RFD) Operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, compliance, and technical performance of the RFD fleet and associated inspection systems. This role serves as the primary owner of fleet health and uptime while providing advanced technical support for specialized rail inspection equipment and onboard technologies. You will act as the technical bridge between Operations, Engineering, Aftermarket Services, and customers to resolve equipment issues, support continuous improvement initiatives, and enhance overall fleet performance. Through proactive maintenance, troubleshooting, and operational support, you will help ensure safe, efficient, and compliant rail inspection operations.
What do we want to know about you?
Required Education & Experience
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, Fleet Management, Railroad Operations, or a related technical field preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in fleet operations, maintenance management, railroad operations, non-destructive testing (NDT), or a related technical environment.
Experience managing preventive maintenance programs and coordinating equipment repairs and inspections.
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, computer, and network systems.
Experience analyzing operational or maintenance data to improve equipment reliability and performance.
Technical Skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience utilizing ERP, maintenance management, or fleet management systems.
Strong technical troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Knowledge of DOT regulations and compliance requirements, including Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
Working knowledge of rail flaw detection and NDT methodologies preferred.
Experience supporting ultrasonic inspection systems preferred.

What will your typical day look like?
Ensure compliance with all DOT regulations, including Hours of Service (HOS) requirements.
Maintain fleet uptime, reliability, and operational readiness across rail inspection assets.
Manage preventive maintenance programs and coordinate inspections, repairs, and equipment upgrades.
Maintain fleet records, registrations, certifications, and compliance documentation.
Analyze operational and maintenance data to identify trends and improve fleet reliability.
Manage relationships with service providers, repair facilities, and equipment vendors.
Develop strategies to improve equipment reliability, reduce operating costs, and increase fleet utilization.
Serve as the primary technical resource for custom-built rail inspection vehicles and onboard systems.
Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, computer, and network-related equipment issues.
Support field personnel in diagnosing and resolving equipment failures.
Lead root-cause investigations and implement corrective actions for recurring issues.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Support the operation and troubleshooting of ultrasonic inspection systems and related technologies.
Assist with investigations involving data quality, inspection integrity, and system performance.
Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and professionalism.
Support railroad operating rules, safety standards, customer initiatives, and training activities.
Provide on-call technical support as required.
Travel up to 15% as needed to support fleet operations, customer requirements, and technical initiatives.
What about the physical demands of the job?
Work is primarily light duty and requires the ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
Ability to sit, stand, and walk unassisted for extended periods.
Regular use of hands and fingers to handle, operate, and inspect equipment, tools, and controls.
Requires the ability to communicate effectively through speaking and hearing.
Correctable vision is required to inspect equipment, review technical documentation, and operate computer systems.
May occasionally be required to work in field environments, maintenance facilities, rail yards, or around operating rail equipment while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary rate for this role is currently $79,100 - 112,800 The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com.
