Utility Designer I - III (all levels)

Summary

The Utility Designer III will play a key role in developing overhead electric distribution projects that enhance and strengthen our clients' electrical systems. You will be responsible for processing field survey data, creating circuit designs, applying utility standards, estimating project costs, and supporting feeder system upgrades. Utilizing GIS software and the utility's work management system, you will ensure designs are accurate, efficient, and aligned with industry best practices. This role requires a strong attention to detail, technical expertise, and a commitment to delivering constructible and reliable designs.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Designs and processes construction work requests for overhead electric distribution systems, following established utility standards, guidelines, and procedures under supervision.
• Develops distribution circuit designs, applying a foundational understanding of circuit drawings and distribution engineering principles. 
• Assists in preparing pole resiliency reports, cost estimates, and required documentation for construction and maintenance projects.
• Maintains and updates project progress within the company's project management system.
• Manages multiple design projects from conception to completion, including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation
• Provides expert technical support to project teams, addressing complex engineer challenges and ensuring high-quality outputs.
• Works closely with engineers and other stakeholders to facilitate seamless communication and coordination throughout the project lifecycle.
• Conducts thorough reviews of design documents, technical reports, and project specifications to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance and applicable standards.
• Mentors and develop junior designers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the team.
• Participates in field visits to evaluate existing conditions, gather data, and ensure that designs meet site-specific requirements.
• Updates GIS databases to accurately reflect current field conditions.
• Attends external meetings with client engineers to define project scope and provides detailed meeting notes for internal and client stakeholders during pre-construction, pre-engineering, and pre-design phases.
• Attends outside meetings with client engineers to define project scope and submit meeting notes for all client and designated internal staff at pre-construction, pre-engineering, and pre-design stages.
• Supports storm restoration efforts by participating in activities such as patrolling and production leadership during emergency response events.
• Supports a culture of safety, adhering to company and industry safety standards.
• Participates in ongoing training to enhance design proficiency and stay current with industry advancements.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education & Experience

                         REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.   4 Years Electrical Utility Design Experience AND: 

a.   Bachelor Degree

b.   2-Year Technical Associate Degree

c.   >=2 years of Electrical Field Experience 

• Technology & Other

1. Familiar with ArcGIS and other mapping systems.
2. General understanding of electrical power theory.
3. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. 
4. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
5. Maintain a neat, well-groomed, and professional appearance. 
6. Must pass background and credit check.
7. Good oral and communication skills are required.
8. Ability to interact with clients in connection with project design responsibilities.
9. Strong ability to tolerate change and willingness to be flexible.
10. Displays a questioning attitude.
11. Working knowledge of AutoCAD.

Working conditions/Physical Requirements/Travel

The job operates in a professional office environment using standard office equipment. Occasionally the job will operate in a field environment.

Core days are typically Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may require weekend and/or holiday work.
