Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The HIM Support Specialist is responsible for providing clerical support for the Health Information Management Department. S/he performs clerical functions such as filing, scanning and indexing. S/he answers phones, prepares correspondence, assembles and analyzes records, and responds to requests for release of patient information.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Retrieves discharged patient charts and paper records.
  • Reconciles records with patient census logs, verifies patient name and account number, and prepares documents for scanning.
  • Analyzes charts for completeness and signatures.
  • Scans and indexes records in a timely manner, ensuring quality and accuracy.
  • Answers the telephone, transfers calls and takes messages.
  • Greets visitors, and ensures that patient and visitor needs are addressed in a prompt and courteous manner.
  • Handles requests for patient records according to policy and procedure.
  • Assists physicians with chart issues.
  • Delivers charts to physicians.
  • Performs various clerical functions, such as filing, faxing, copying and processing mail.
  • Prepares correspondence and compiles reports.
  • Conducts interviews with new mothers and enters data into the Birth Registry. Prepares Paternity Papers as needed. 
  • Orders and stocks department supplies, and maintains a clean work area.
  • Follows all HIPAA, Federal, and State Confidentiality, Privacy and Security Laws.
  • Additional Duties as assigned.

Requirements

 EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficient in typing and computer applications
  • Clerical experience preferred
  • Some knowledge of medical terminology preferred
