Position Summary
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides emergency response, intake screening,
medication delivery, and clinical support services within the correctional facility under
physician standing orders and nursing supervision. The EMT practices within the
supplemental EMS scope authorized by New Mexico law and facility protocol.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Serve as a primary responder for medical emergencies within the facility, providing
stabilization until higher-level care is available.
• Perform intake medical screenings to identify urgent health needs and continuityof-medication issues.
• Deliver pre-packaged, routine oral or topical medications to stable patients in
accordance with the eMAR and signed Physician Standing Orders, as permitted by
NMAC 7.27.11.
• Perform chronic care monitoring tasks, including blood glucose checks, blood
pressure measurement, and pulse oximetry.
• Administer physician-ordered nebulizer treatments and metered-dose inhalers
(MDIs).
• Assist nursing staff during sick call, medication pass, and routine clinical operations.
• Prepare patients for off-site medical transport and assist with monitoring during
transfers.
• Document all patient interactions and medication deliveries immediately in the
Patient Health Record.
• Follow all infection control, safety, and documentation requirements.
Qualifications
• Active EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate certification in the State of New Mexico.
• CPR/BLS certification required.
• Experience in emergency or correctional healthcare preferred.
