Position Overview

The Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources department and ensuring the effective administration of the Firm's HR programs, policies, and processes.

This position will support and manage a broad range of HR functions, including recruiting and talent acquisition, employee relations, onboarding and offboarding, benefits and leave administration, performance management, HRIS administration, compliance, employee engagement, and HR process improvement.

The HR Generalist will serve as a primary HR resource for employees and managers on routine HR matters and will escalate complex, sensitive, or high-risk matters to the Director of Human Resources.

This is a full-time hybrid position based in Fairfax, VA or Silver Spring, MD, with regular in-office presence required in accordance with Firm policy.

Key Responsibilities

Recruiting & Talent Acquisition

  • Manage and coordinate full-cycle recruiting for assigned positions from job posting through offer and onboarding.
  • Partner with hiring managers to understand staffing needs, required qualifications, and selection criteria.
  • Review resumes and applications and conduct initial HR phone screenings.
  • Coordinate interviews and maintain timely communication with candidates and hiring managers.
  • Facilitate candidate evaluations, collect interview feedback, and make hiring recommendations.
  • Prepare and coordinate offer letters within approved compensation ranges.
  • Recruit for attorneys, paralegals, administrative staff, law clerks, and other Firm positions.
  • Manage recruiting pipelines and ensure timely follow-up throughout the hiring process.
  • Own day-to-day recruiting for intern and law clerk positions, with administrative support from the HR Coordinator.
  • Ensure consistent and compliant recruiting and selection practices across departments.

Employee Relations & HR Support

  • Serve as a primary HR resource for employees and managers regarding routine HR questions, policies, and workplace concerns.
  • Respond to employee inquiries and provide guidance within the scope of the role.
  • Identify and escalate complex, sensitive, or potentially high-risk employee relations matters to the Director of Human Resources.
  • Support employee relations investigations, disciplinary meetings, performance discussions, and corrective action processes.
  • Participate in employee meetings, including performance discussions and terminations, as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation regarding employee relations matters.
  • Provide managers with guidance regarding Firm policies, procedures, and HR practices.

Onboarding & Offboarding

  • Own the end-to-end HR process for employee onboarding and offboarding.
  • Ensure new hires complete required employment documentation, background checks, eligibility verification, training, and other pre-employment requirements.
  • Coordinate onboarding activities with HR, IT, Finance, Operations, and department leadership.
  • Review and validate employee changes, including job titles, departments, reporting relationships, transfers, and promotions.
  • Initiate and coordinate employee offboarding processes and ensure appropriate stakeholders are notified.
  • Ensure timely completion of separation documentation, HRIS updates, benefits coordination, and other offboarding requirements.
  • Coordinate exit interviews for non-attorney employees.
  • Support the Director of Human Resources with sensitive, senior-level, or attorney departures.
  • Ensure onboarding and offboarding procedures are consistently followed and documented.

HRIS, Records & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate employee information and records in the HRIS and other HR systems.
  • Review and validate organizational changes and ensure employee information is accurately reflected across systems.
  • Partner with the HR Coordinator to ensure administrative HR records and systems remain current.
  • Maintain records related to required training, certifications, licenses, continuing education, and other compliance requirements.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and Firm policies.
  • Support periodic audits of employee records, HR processes, and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain knowledge of employment law developments, HR best practices, and regulatory changes.
  • Assist with updating HR policies, procedures, and SOPs as needed.

Benefits, Leave & Payroll Support

  • Assist employees with routine questions regarding benefits, leave, PTO, payroll, and other HR programs.
  • Coordinate benefits enrollment and employee changes with applicable vendors and internal teams.
  • Support administration of PTO, leave, and other employee programs.
  • Assist with FMLA and other protected leave processes, escalating complex matters to the Director of Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with Finance/Payroll to ensure employee status and compensation changes are accurately reflected.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation related to benefits and leave administration.

Performance Management & Employee Engagement

  • Support the Firm's performance review process, including scheduling, documentation, tracking, and follow-up.
  • Assist managers with the administrative aspects of performance evaluations.
  • Track completion of performance reviews and other required employee assessments.
  • Support employee recognition, engagement, morale, and retention initiatives.
  • Coordinate employee engagement activities and Firm-wide HR programs.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the employee experience and make recommendations to HR leadership.

HR Operations & Process Improvement

  • Develop, maintain, and improve HR SOPs, workflows, forms, and other process documentation.
  • Identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements to HR processes.
  • Maintain HR calendars, trackers, reports, and departmental resources.
  • Partner with the HR Coordinator to establish clear ownership of administrative and operational HR responsibilities.
  • Review the HR Coordinator's work as appropriate and provide guidance, training, and quality control.
  • Serve as an operational backup to the Director of Human Resources.
  • Support special HR projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • 3-5 years of progressive Human Resources experience required.
  • Experience across multiple HR functions, including recruiting, employee relations, onboarding/offboarding, benefits, HRIS administration, and compliance.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and HR best practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently while collaborating effectively with employees, managers, and leadership.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to quickly learn HRIS, ATS, benefits, and other HR technology platforms.
  • ADP experience preferred.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification is a plus.
  • Experience working in a law firm or professional services environment is a plus.
