Job Title: ASL Interpreter

Position Purpose

  • This position supports the Mission of Trinity Health and Holy Cross Health by serving to facilitate medical and other communication among patients, family members, visitors, and Holy Cross Health clinical and non-clinical staff, and by working to minimize linguistic and cultural barriers.

As a “ASL Interpreter” you will:

  • Acts as a neutral participant in the interpretation encounter and conveys a non-judgmental attitude about the content of the interpretation
  • Accurately conveys the statements made by healthcare providers and patients by: (1) interpreting all communication that occurs within hearing of the patient; (2) thoroughly and faithfully interpreting the entire message, without omitting, adding, condensing, or changing any information; through the use of language that is readily understandable, and culturally- and age-appropriate; and, (3) refrains from offering personal opinion or medical knowledge, serving only as the conduit of information exchange between the healthcare provider and the patient. 
  • Will involve interaction with patients, family members, and visitors. 
  • Respond to direct calls from Holy Cross Health’s staff. 
  • Requires a candidate who possesses excellent verbal and written fluency in English and American Sign Language, and the ability to interact tactfully and empathetically.
  • Good judgment in the treatment of confidential patient information is also necessary. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to interpret spoken English into ASL and vice versa in a variety of healthcare settings, including patient consultations, medical procedures, and educational sessions.
  • Strong fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
  • Uphold strictly patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations.
  • Collaborate effectively with healthcare team members to ensure effective communication for Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.
  • Stay up to date on best practices in ASL interpreting and cultural competency.
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) must be obtained within 3 months of hire. Completion of a formal medically qualified interpreter-training program preferred

Pay Range: $52.00 - $57.54

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
