As a professional, the Medical Laboratory Technician performs laboratory testing following the established policies and procedures within the laboratory department and UnityPoint Health to aid the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. They are responsible for solving practical and analytical problems, maintaining, and troubleshooting highly complex instrumentation, and must adhere to all quality and regulatory guidelines to ensure the highest quality patient care.

Responsibilities

• Primary work setting is in a hospital or independent laboratory in a variety of clinical lab departments where they will perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing. • Prepares biological specimens, arranges and assigns workload by priority.  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following policies related to proper identification and labeling. • Provides accurate laboratory test results within established turnaround time expectations.  • Recognize and troubleshoot, pre-analytic, analytic and postanalytic results. • Makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of the overall functions, policies, and procedures in the assigned area to ensure accurate and quality patient care • Recognizes and interprets quality control outliers and abnormal patient results • Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on highly complex equipment. • Uses a variety of computer systems for orders, results, tracking, quality control, and problem solving.  • May perform specimen collections from patients of all ages • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:  

  • Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from and accredited institution required.  

Experience:  

  • Prefer one (1) year of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency. 

License(s)/Certification(s):  

  • Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician by Board of Registry of ASCP or AMT within 1 year, required.
