A Brief Overview

Performs tasks contributing to performance of maintenance dialysis for patients with end stage renal disease, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. All facility staff must meet the personnel qualifications and demonstrated competencies necessary to serve collectively the comprehensive complex needs of the dialysis patient. Identifies intradialytic comorbidities and monitors patient and equipment alarms during treatment.

What you will do

  • Understands water room equipment operation and function; completes testing and follows up appropriately on abnormal results and completes required documentation.
  • Completes dialysis treatments, initiation and discontinuation from internal accesses, monitoring of vascular access function and appropriately reports signs of stenosis, occlusion or infection to RN.
  • Assembles and prepares necessary treatment supplies, rinses and primes dialyzer and attaches and installs all required tubing according to unit procedure. Test and set parameters according to dialysis prescription.
  • Monitors equipment for safe and proper functioning, respond to alarms, and make appropriate adjustments; including blood flow rates and fluid removal rates
  • Completes accurate documentation of dialysis access and patient treatment.
  • Observes patient during treatments, notifies RN of any adverse reactions. Responds to dialysis –related emergencies, immediately seeking assistance from RN.
  • Provides technical assistance to nurses and readily follows direction from nurses for hemodialysis treatments.
  • Participates in collaboration with patients, family, physicians, other nursing staff and all ancillary departments.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

  • High School or GED Equivalent
  • Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) - Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) within 1-1/2 Yrs or
  • Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) - Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) within 1-1/2 Yrs
  • Dialysis experience or healthcare experience
