Alaska Waste, a Waste Connections company, is looking for a safety conscious Lead Driver to join our team in Sitka, AK!

The schedule will be Monday to Friday, 5am or 8am depending on the day. 8-9 hours a day. With some required weekend work.

The starting rate for a CDL or Non-CDL holding applicant will be $32.00 to $37.00 per hour depending on experience. We are also offering a Stay on Bonus of $5,000, paid out within your first year of employment.

In addition to performing driving and transfer station duties, the Lead Driver is responsible for providing personnel supervision and development, including training, scheduling, coaching, safety leadership, and fostering positive employee morale. The Lead Driver will actively promote and support the company’s safety program as a top priority, ensuring safe work practices are consistently followed. This position also supports the growth and development of operations personnel by providing guidance, mentoring, and opportunities for professional advancement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to safely operate a garbage truck on specified routes to collect solid waste.
  • Ability to read route sheets and service each customer identified on the sheet or assigned by the dispatcher.
  • Perform routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles such as checking fluids, safety equipment, and tires.
  • Ability to perform a physically demanding job, loading and unloading, at times with no helpers.
  • Courteous interaction with our customers and perform other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to physical risks such as moving mechanical parts which require following basic safety precautions.
  • The employee is exposed to outside weather, including frequent wet and/or humid conditions, as well as exposure to fumes and vibration. Noise level is usually moderate.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Class D license at a minimum.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days of employment or Valid Class A or Class B CDL with Air Brakes Endorsement.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT Medical Card exam.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, comprehend and communicate in English. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
