Job Summary

Supports the safe delivery of patient care through staff training, reviewing and recommending updates to clinical policies, procedures and protocols, verifying competency of medical assistants and nurses with clinical procedures and protocols, coordinating medical emergency preparedness and managing the health center's vaccine programs.

Responsibilities and Duties

 
  1.  Supports the delivery of safe, high-quality clinical services provided by medical assistants and licensed nurses.
    1. Reviews and recommends updates to clinical policies, procedures and protocols as assigned
    2. Verifies competency with the performance of screenings and clinical procedures by licensed nurses and medical assistants.
    3. Verifies competency with manufacturer’s instructions for use, maintenance and quality control monitoring (if applicable) of patient care equipment such as lab equipment.
 
  1. Manages the clinical competency assessment process for clinical support staff.
    1. Provides training and assesses skills and competencies of clinical support staff.
    2. Collaborates with Practice Managers when clinical training needs are identified and provides training to ensure clinical competency of staff.
    3. Provides clinical competency feedback to the Practice Manager for training coordination.
    4. Coordinates training and implementation of new clinical services and patient-care equipment as assigned.
    5. Develops training activities to meet clinical needs as assigned.
    6. Maintains a digital library of clinical support staff education materials and resources.
    7. Ensures all training materials reflect current evidence-based practice and are derived from scholarly sources
 
  1. Coordinates medical emergency preparedness activities.
    1. Provides Basic Life Support (BLS) training, assesses internal BLS Instructors’ training skills, and ensures BLS classes are scheduled to support clinical staff.
    2. Reviews and recommends updates to policies, procedures and clinical protocols related to medical emergency management annually and as needed.
    3. Coordinates staff training and medical emergency drills annually.
 
  1. Administers the organization’s vaccine program.
    1. Serves as the primary contact and administrator for the health center’s vaccine programs.
    2. Participates in NCDHHS vaccine site surveys as needed.
    3. Monitors compliance with the NC Immunization Program, Vaccines for Children Program, and CDC requirements for vaccine programs.
    4. Works with clinic staff and practice manager to correct deficiencies. Escalates unresolved issues as needed.
    5. Reviews and recommends updates to the health center’s vaccine management policies and procedures every 2 years and as needed.
    6. Coordinates and facilitates staff training on vaccine inventory management, storage, handling, administration and documentation.
 
  1. Coordinates and conducts clinic safety rounds twice per year in the medical and dental clinics to assess compliance with clinical-related procedures and clinical emergencies preparedness.
    1. Schedules safety rounds with the Practice Manager.
    2. Completes a safety checklist during each clinic rounds and shares findings with the Practice Manager, QI Director, COO and Medical or Dental Director as applicable for the clinic.
    3. Shares recommended actions to correct deficiencies.


Qualifications and Skills

Associate Degree in Nursing.  Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in good standing with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.  Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Basic Life Support Instructor certification. Current unrestricted North Carolina Driver License.
