Position Overview

Birch Agency is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to support students in a LIFE (Learning in Functional Environments) Classroom serving elementary-aged students in Halifax, Virginia.

This role focuses on supporting students with significant educational and functional needs through individualized instruction, life skills development, communication support, and academic programming. The classroom maintains a small caseload of no more than 10 students, allowing for highly individualized instruction and meaningful student engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) based on student needs and goals.

  • Provide instruction in academic, functional, communication, social-emotional, and adaptive skills.

  • Implement evidence-based teaching strategies and positive behavior supports.

  • Collaborate with related service providers, paraprofessionals, and school staff.

  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation.

  • Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings.

  • Adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet individual learning needs.

  • Foster a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field preferred.

  • Active Virginia Special Education teaching license or eligibility to obtain licensure.

  • Experience working with students with significant disabilities preferred.

  • Strong classroom management and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to develop individualized instructional plans and monitor progress effectively.

Work Environment

  • Elementary school setting (K5).

  • LIFE classroom with a maximum caseload of 10 students.

  • Collaborative team environment with support from related service providers and administrators.
