What You’ll Do

The Behavioral Health Specialist II works as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team to help residents develop emotional regulation, coping skills, healthy relationships, and positive decision-making while maintaining a safe, structured, and trauma-informed environment. The position partners closely with clinicians, case managers, and residential staff to reinforce treatment goals, provide behavioral coaching, and support youth during periods of emotional distress.

The purpose of this position is to strengthen the residential treatment team by adding experienced behavioral health professionals who bring practical knowledge of mental health, trauma, and behavioral disorders. 

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Build positive therapeutic relationships with residents through daily interaction.
  • Reinforce treatment goals, behavior support plans, and coping strategies developed by the clinical team.
  • Provide behavioral coaching and emotional support to youth experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges.
  • Utilize trauma-informed care principles and Safe Crisis Management (SCM) techniques to prevent and de-escalate behavioral crises.
  • Observe resident behavior, identify emerging concerns, and communicate significant observations to clinicians and residential leadership.
  • Assist residents in developing emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and independent living skills.
  • Model effective engagement and de-escalation techniques for Youth Development Specialists and provide informal coaching during daily operations.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and provide behavioral observations to support treatment planning.
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic residential environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Human Services, Social Work, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Master's degree in Psychology, Human Services, Social Work, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Education, or another related behavioral health field highly valued. Candidates with a relevant master's degree may be eligible for placement within the highest compensation tier based on their experience and qualifications.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in behavioral health, mental health, residential treatment, juvenile justice, child welfare, developmental disabilities, education, or another human services setting.
  • Experience working with adolescents is strongly preferred.
  • Experience utilizing trauma-informed care and verbal de-escalation techniques strongly preferred.

Other Qualifications:

  • At least twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Must have a valid Driver's License
  • Physical exam that includes TB and drug testing.
  • Must pass both federal and state background checks which screen for crimes including, but not limited to drug related crimes, violent crimes, sexual abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and repeated misdemeanors.
  • Satisfactory completion of background screening and applicable pre-employment checks, including but not limited to employment and/or personal reference and driving records.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

Schedule

• Full-Time

• Shift: 2:45 pm - 10:45 pm, including every weekend

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist individuals as needed

• Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
