This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Geologist/Hydrogeologist for our Portland, ME office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.  The successful candidate will work as part of a project team to gather and analyze geological, hydrogeological and geochemical data in both the field and office settings.

Your Impact

  • Manage, analyze, evaluate, and interpret hydrogeologic, geologic and other field data (chemical concentration and LNAPL thickness) obtained during investigations, incorporating the impact of geology and hydrogeology on contaminant fate and transport
  • Prepare work plans related to investigation and remediation activities
  • Observe the drilling and correct installation of soil borings, monitoring wells, and remediation wells
  • Conduct environmental investigations by utilizing standard field sampling procedures for various environmental media, including USCS soil classification methods
  • Collect and document field data and observations in a clear and organized manner utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment and workspace monitoring equipment
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Prepare boring logs, data tables, potentiometric contour maps, isoconcentration contour maps, hydrographs, and cross-sections
  • Prepare bid requests and assist with subcontractor selection, contracting and coordination
  • Supervise contractors while conducting environmental site investigation and remediation work
  • Oversee and implement appropriate management of investigation-derived waste, including containerization, storage, labeling, and characterization
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of common classes of environmental contaminants (e.g., petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, RCRA metals, PCBs) and basic contaminant fate and transport mechanisms
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs


Safely perform work in the office and field; fieldwork may occur in all seasonal weather conditions, using equipment (with an ability to lift and move approximately 50 pounds without assistance) and operating vehicles on behalf of the company.

Local and national travel (up to 50% of the time) to support client and agency meetings and/or audit project sites

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, Hydrogeology, or closely related discipline
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in the environmental consulting industry or related field
  • This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests.  A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.
  • Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator
  • Valid US driver’s license
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time; overnight stays and air travel may be required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in rough terrain and adverse weather conditions
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • Travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree is preferred
  • Geologist-in-Training or minimum academic requirements to obtain state licensure
  • Current OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training.
  • CPR and First Aid Training.
  • Preferred Software Experience: ArcGIS and industry standard software packages, such as Surfer, gINT, and AQTESOLV®
  • Experience conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments following ASTM International Standard E 1527-13
