Position Overview
The Lands Council is seeking motivated individuals to join our seasonal Urban Tree Planting Crew. Crew members will help plant and care for trees throughout Spokane neighborhoods as part of our CoolCanopy program. This position supports our mission to expand tree canopy, improve climate resilience, and increase tree equity in our region.
Crew members will work as part of a small team planting trees at residential homes and community spaces. This is a hands-on outdoor position ideal for individuals who enjoy physical work, teamwork, and making a visible difference in the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Plant and stake trees at residential and community sites
- Transport tools, trees, mulch, and supplies to planting locations
- Dig planting holes and properly install trees following program guidelines
- Apply mulch and ensure proper tree placement and care
- Assist with watering and basic tree establishment tasks
- Interact respectfully with community members and homeowners
- Maintain tools and assist with loading/unloading equipment
- Follow safety practices and guidance from program staff
Schedule
- Typical workdays: Thursdays and Fridays
- 6–8 hour shifts
- Seasonal position running approximately May through October
- Approximately 12–16 hours per week
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 40–50 pounds (trees, mulch, tools)
- Ability to dig and perform physical outdoor work for extended periods
- Comfortable working in varying weather conditions
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain and residential landscapes
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in environmental stewardship, urban forestry, or community work
- Experience with landscaping, gardening, or outdoor labor (not required)
- Ability to work well on a small team
- Positive attitude and reliability
- Friendly and able to communicate well with residents
