Ultium Cells Overview:

Ultium Cells, LLC. is a joint venture Lithium-ion automotive battery cell manufacturing plant between LG Energy Solution, Ltd., and General Motors. This high-technology plant is a new construction that will have the latest in battery cell manufacturing technology. This $2.3 billion investment will be among the largest battery cell manufacturing plants in the world. Ultium Cells will produce battery cells for General Motors’ North American electric vehicle applications.

Ultium Cells’ partners include LG Energy Solution, Ltd.; the world’s largest manufacturer of automotive battery cells, and General Motors; a global company committed to delivering safer, better and more sustainable ways for people to get around.

Position Description:

The Facilities Utilities Engineering Manager will oversee, plan, and direct activities for a large group of engineers and technical support personnel. You will take part in planning, procurement, fabrication, installation, and upkeep of tooling required in an area in complex, special or unusual situation. You will oversee a department or group of departments where the work involves a considerable amount of creativity and perception and a high level of independent discernment in making decisions. You will be responsible for the development and administration of service contracts.

This role requires a highly organized and proactive individual with excellent leadership skills. The Engineering Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the Facilities Engineering team properly repairs and maintains all equipment to remain in proper working condition, which minimizes downtime and maximizes efficiency.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Foster a proactive safety culture by engaging team members and promoting a safe work environment.
  • Engage in all aspects of talent development (recruiting, mentorship, career development & progression and succession planning).  Establish a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Production, Equipment Maintenance, Engineering, Facilities, Equipment Technology, Finance, and others to drive successful execution of plant goals and project deliverables.
  • Maintain open communication between the tenant and Sustainable Workplaces
  • Stay updated on relevant local, provincial and federal regulations and standards, ensuring compliance in all projects and initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers, understanding their needs and requirements to deliver tailored solutions. 
  • Drive UC LMS by coaching engineers, leading initiatives, performing audits, establishing group objectives, and maintaining your departmental business plan.
  • Achieve Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost and Environmental goals.
  • Manage budget performance in accordance with your plant and department goals and cost initiatives, continuously seeking ways to generate savings and reduce costs.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with external vendors and 3rd party service providers. Provide oversight and guidance for work being performed by contractors, ensuring adherence to safety standards and project specifications.
  • Support innovation and continuous improvement across all levels of your organization related to safety, quality, responsiveness, energy, materials, space savings, equipment, and any process efficiencies.
  • Adjust schedules to account for emergency work.
  • Assist and support Maintenance Manager
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to complete Root Cause Analysis, when necessary.
  • Collaborate with Planners, Engineers, Supervisors, and Technicians to gather parts for planned downtime repairs and projects.
  • Identify Continuous Improvement opportunities supporting Ultium's Lean Manufacturing system
  • Cl Principle (Reduce machine failure and repair time to improve MTTR and MTBF)
  • Assist in machine breakdown events as needed and coordinate outside resources when necessary
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Supervisors, and Technicians to identify training opportunities.
  • Participate in the selection, training, development, and evaluations of employees.
  • Pay People Appropriately.

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in an engineering field.

Employee may be exposed to or working with hazardous materials and/or hazardous waste. Upon hire, employee will receive initial Environmental training over RCRA, SWPPP, SPCC, and emergency escalation. Annual refresher training will be completed every year after to fulfill the requirements of 40 CFR. Other training to be provided as required.
