Position Summary Description

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance and operations of Shady Hills Energy Center in accordance with approved plant maintenance, operations, safety and environmental procedures.

WORK LOCATION: Shady Hills Energy Center in Spring Hill, FL. 

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Five (5) years of I&C Maintenance in an industrial setting is required for Technician I-level, and/or three (3) years of I&C Maintenance experience in a power plant is required for Technician II-level. Prior I&C Maintenance in a power generating station is desirable. Completion of a formal, accredited, or certified maintenance craft training program is desirable.  Additional college-level coursework in math and science desirable. Ability to qualify and maintain competency in the following skill areas is required:

Maintenance Technician I

  1. Basic Mechanical Maintenance
  2. Basic Electrical Maintenance
  3. All Site-Specific Safety Standards
  4. All Site-Specific Environmental and Water Standards 

Maintenance Technician II

  1. Advance Mechanical Maintenance and/or Advance Electrical Maintenance
  2. All Site-Specific Safety Standards
  3. All Site-Specific Environmental and Water Standards

This role requires the ability to qualify and maintain competency in the I&C skill set. Additionally, the ability to qualify and maintain competency as Outside Plant Operator is required. 

Competency will be demonstrated by a combination of written exams, oral boards, and completion of practical demonstrations as required by the qualification standards. Must have the ability to become fully qualified to perform the aspects of plant I&C equipment maintenance. Must recertify annually on skill qualifications. Must have the ability to function effectively as a team member.

Must have a through working knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity, magnetism, and electric circuits; must be familiar with equipment services and operating characteristics of a power plant; must have a thorough working knowledge of safe rigging and scaffolding practices and the care and use of tackle, hoist, and ladders. Must remain knowledgeable of safety policies and clearance procedures. Must be able to work from complex drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and specifications; must have demonstrated the ability to perform the work involved with the installation and maintenance of the various I&C equipment found in a power plant, preferably a combine cycle plant, and to use a variety of tools and electrical test equipment; must exhibit an ability to perform and lead crew members in work requiring a high degree of skill and expertise, to instruct less skilled personnel, and to assume a high degree of responsibility; must be able to communicate orders and instructions in a manner that will generate effective and efficient work performance. Must be alert, resourceful, and capable of making correct decisions in emergencies. Must possess advanced knowledge of process instrumentation and controls. Must be able to comprehend and seek resolutions to complicated problems. Must have the ability to understand and follow highly technical written and oral instructions. Must have the ability to assume a high degree of job responsibility. Essential Functions

  • Reports to and takes direction from the Supervisor of Operations and/or Supervisor of Maintenance as assigned
  • Ensures safe, effective, and efficient maintenance of the plant during assigned shifts. Complies with safety rules and procedures; uses safe work practices and behaviors.  Reports all safety concerns.
  • Complies with NERC, Environmental, Health & Safety guidelines and all operating permits and regulations
  • Maintains Plant equipment in accordance with all approved maintenance procedures
  • Effectively utilizes approved casualty procedures, including the Emergency Response Plan
  • Maintains Outside Plant Operator operating skills to support the operation of the plant as required
  • Maintains and troubleshoots all instrument & control plant equipment and documents in support of that goal
  • Completes identified routine and abnormal condition job standards for each of the skill sets
  • Conducts and receives a thorough turnover when passing on or receiving duties from another I&C Tech or other plant personnel
  • Coordinates and monitors assigned contract personnel activities during maintenance outages or projects
  • Identifies plant deficiencies, initiates work orders, and completes same as assigned. Maintains plant maintenance documentation as needed or assigned. Redlines any changes to drawings and forwards to Plant Engineer
  • Effectively utilizes control and wiring diagrams in order to troubleshoot control issues
  • Assists in the training and qualification of plant personnel 
  • Maintains and/or repairs all instrumentation equipment with minimal or no supervision
  • Sets up and maintains drawings and instructional materials for instrument & control systems
  • Assists the Operations & Maintenance Supervisors in determining required parts for plant instrumentation systems
  • Develops preventative and predictive maintenance procedures for I&C equipment as directed by the Supervisor of Operations and/or Supervisor of Maintenance
  • Confers with Maintenance and Operations personnel relative to adequate protective measures and ascertains proper implementation
  • Diagnoses, locates, and repairs instrumentation and controls problems
  • Performs a variety of duties such as checking and verifying proper equipment clearances and proper protective grounds and inspecting completed work
  • Directs and trains employees as assigned; assists in maintaining records
  • Properly operates all necessary I&C measuring and test equipment as well as hand and power tools
  • Performs calibrations and preventive maintenance of instrumentation and controls as assigned
  • Performs instrumentation and controls troubleshooting and repairs as required. This includes locating and repairing defects in control systems involving electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic units which control level, pressure, temperature, position, and flow parameters
  • Troubleshoots and corrects problems related to the DCS and other plant control systems or PLCs
  • Performs necessary software, firmware, and hardware repairs in order to maintain plant systems utilizing programmable logic controllers, personal computers, and data loggers
  • Maintains and repairs Plant CEMS equipment and software
  • Traces logic diagrams, corrects errors, compiles reports, and forces points as directed by supervision
  • Completes required initial and recertification training as outlined in the appropriate qualification standard
  • Serves as a member of the Emergency Response Team
  • Operates mechanized equipment such as cranes and forklifts
  • Assists management and supervision in the planning and scheduling of Outage activities
  • Performs other similar or less skilled work, housekeeping, and preservation duties as assigned
  • Performs other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned

 

Physical Requirements

Must be able to follow established protective measures including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).  Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.  Work at heights over 250 feet and in confined areas.  Must be able to safely lift materials up to 60 lbs.  Required to perform job tasks while wearing protective clothing, air purified respirators, and self-contained breathing apparatus.  Manual labor is required.  Must be able to ascend and descend stationary and portable ladders.

 

Working Conditions

While working in certain areas of the plant there is the potential for exposure to hazards typical of an industrial working environment. Required to work overtime hours upon request. Required to work various schedules including a rotating shift schedule and weekends. Required to work in areas of high noise, dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high voltage, and high fluid pressures. Required to perform outside duties under adverse weather conditions. Required to use emergency response equipment in emergencies and for training.  Required to work with and around chemicals. Expected to participate in plant training, as required.
