Police Patrol Officer  (POS # 4310024 & 4310025)

The Spring Lake Fire Department is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a full-time Firefighter. All are welcome to apply if they meet the minimum qualifications required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Emergency Response; Fire Suppression and Rescue, including entry, ventilation, salvage work, containment of hazardous materials;
  • Operation of Fire Apparatus;
  • Maintenance of Fire Apparatus, Equipment, Station, and Grounds;
  • Participation in continuing training and instruction program through individual study of technical materials;
  • Ability to wear all required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment);
  • Ability to handle stressful situations;
  • Participation in Fire and Life Safety Education programs provided to businesses, groups, daycares,
  • Flexible availability for rotating shifts; shift work schedule is 48/96.

Join the Town of Spring Lake Police Department

The Town of Spring Lake is seeking dedicated, community-oriented, and highly motivated individuals to serve as Police Patrol Officers. This position is responsible for protecting life and property, preserving the peace, enforcing federal, state, and local laws, preventing crime, and building positive relationships within the community through professional law enforcement services.

Police Patrol Officers perform a variety of patrol, investigative, traffic enforcement, and community policing duties while exercising sound judgment, integrity, and professionalism.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas by vehicle, bicycle, or foot to prevent crime and protect life and property.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Investigate criminal offenses, traffic crashes, and other incidents.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects and collecting evidence.
  • Enforce traffic laws through education, warnings, citations, and arrests when appropriate.
  • Prepare accurate reports documenting incidents, arrests, investigations, and other law enforcement activities.
  • Make lawful arrests, transport prisoners, and testify in court proceedings as required.
  • Respond to domestic disturbances, mental health crises, and other emergency situations.
  • Provide first aid and emergency assistance until relieved by medical personnel.
  • Participate in crime prevention initiatives, community outreach events, and public education programs.
  • Safely operate department-issued vehicles, firearms, communications equipment, and other law enforcement tools.
  • Maintain all required certifications and successfully complete mandatory training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; 
  • Certification as a North Carolina law enforcement officer or the ability to obtain certification in accordance with North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission requirements.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.
  • Minimum age of 21 years at the time of appointment.
  • Applicants must also successfully complete all required pre-employment testing, including a background investigation, criminal history check, medical examination, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and other assessments as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current North Carolina law enforcement certification.
  • Prior sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Military service with an honorable discharge.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
  • Bilingual communication skills.
  • Specialized training such as:
    • Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
    • De-escalation
    • Community Policing
    • Traffic Enforcement
    • Criminal Investigations
    • Drug Recognition
    • Field Training Officer (FTO)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Exercise sound judgment in stressful situations.
  • Build positive relationships with diverse community members.
  • Prepare clear and accurate reports.
  • Resolve conflicts professionally and ethically.
  • Operate computers, mobile technology, and law enforcement software.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • This position requires the ability to perform the physical demands of law enforcement, including standing, walking, running, climbing, lifting, carrying, dragging, operating emergency vehicles, qualifying with firearms, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
