Overview

The Heat Treat Operator is responsible for operating furnaces and related equipment used to heat and treat metal parts. This process changes the metal’s strength and durability so it meets production and safety standards. The role involves working with heavy machinery, high temperatures, and strict quality and safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review production schedules or instructions to understand what needs to be treated and at what temperature or time.

  • Set up, operate, and monitor heat-treating machines such as furnaces, baths, and flame-hardening equipment.

  • Adjust temperature controls and monitor gauges or color indicators to ensure proper heating cycles.

  • Load and unload metal parts using cranes, hoists, or conveyors.

  • Cool or “quench” parts in water, oil, or other cooling baths after heating.

  • Record furnace times, temperatures, and part details for quality tracking.

  • Inspect treated parts to confirm they meet hardness and quality specifications.

  • Perform routine maintenance on heat-treating equipment.

  • Follow all safety rules and use required protective gear.

  • Assist in training new team members on machine operation and safety.

Tools and Equipment Used

  • Furnaces, flame-hardening machines, and induction heating systems

  • Hoists, cranes, and pallet jacks for moving materials

  • Hardness testers for checking part quality

  • Basic hand tools (screwdrivers, grease guns, etc.)

  • Safety equipment (gloves, glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, steel-toe shoes)

Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic mechanical understanding of how machines work and are maintained

  • Ability to monitor gauges and controls accurately

  • Good attention to detail and commitment to quality

  • Clear communication and teamwork skills

  • Strong safety awareness in a hot, industrial environment

  • Basic reading and writing in English for instructions and recordkeeping

Minimum Qualifications

  • Some high school education

  • At least 6 months of forklift experience

  • 1 year of general manufacturing or production experience

  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal safety and work instructions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational or technical school training

  • Experience in heavy manufacturing or steel production

  • OSHA or safety training certifications

  • Overhead crane operation experience

  • Ability to read and write English proficiently

  • Ability to pass a post-offer physical exam and drug screen

Work Environment

  • Indoor manufacturing plant environment with hot temperatures (can exceed 100°F)

  • Exposure to heavy machinery, open flames, and heated metal parts

  • Requires use of protective gear at all times

  • Noise levels can be moderate to high throughout the shift

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly stand, walk, bend, and use both hands throughout the shift

  • Lift or move items up to 50 lbs. (with assistance or equipment when needed)

  • Use of manual tools and handling of metal parts

  • Ability to perform repetitive movements and maintain focus in a fast-paced setting
