Position overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a DOC Background Screening Manager. The ideal candidate will serve as a full-line supervisor, providing guidance and training to assigned staff, and counseling staff regarding work performance. In addition, the role develops and maintains contacts with outside entities to promote proper and effective background criteria procedures, serves as a liaison with Law Enforcement Agencies, employers, and applicants, and prepares documentation to substantiate denial or approval of employment. Essential Functions

  • Serves as the Background Manager
  • Coordinates and conducts training for staff on the use of multiple files, systems and informational sources to conduct appropriate pre-employment/pre-service background investigations 
  • Serves as liaison with outside contacts including the Judicial System, police departments, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Secretary of State
  • Serves as full-line supervisor
  • Provides input to the Employee Screening and Recruitment Manager with budget recommendations on systems, personnel and reports 
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in business or public administration
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in pre-employment/pre-service screening, or similar employment screening

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience with pre-employment/pre-service screening, or similar employment screening processes
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience supervising staff in adhering to policies and procedures
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience training staff in the use of systems and resources necessary to complete work tasks
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience, maintaining confidentiality and working with sensitive topics
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience drafting policies and procedures for a large public safety agency. (500 or more employees)
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience working with high level contacts specific to law enforcement or correctional entities
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience interpreting data and preparing reports to convey appropriate facts and figures

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited

  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department
