We are currently searching for an entry/midlevel Drainage/Hydraulics Engineer in Training (E.I.) to support our Mid Atlantic Region located in Springfield, VA. 


To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering.


What you’ll be doing:

  • Assists with various assignments for VDOT and local municipalities
  • Performs engineering deliverables associated with drainage and roadway infrastructure improvements
  • Assists and prepares project plans using the latest CADD software including but not limited to MicroStation, OpenRoads, Civil3D, and/or AutoCADD, among others
  • Contributes to the preparation and/or modification of engineering reports and calculations for a wide variety of projects
  • Works with senior staff to develop plans and calculations for transportation and drainage related projects
  • Performs the design of stormwater management facilities to meet water quality and quantity requirements
  • Prepares and assists in the preparation of project construction quantities, details, cost estimates and the preparation of project specifications
  • Performs other duties as assigned


What you need to have:

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering 
  • EIT (E.I) Certification is desired (or the commitment to acquire it within 1-year)
  • 1 - 4 years of engineering experience
  • Experience with (or strong willingness to learn) MicroStation, OpenRoads, Geopak, Civil3D, StormCAD, ORD, HEC-RAS, GIS and/or SUDA software (among other software)
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)


Bonus points if you have:

  • Previous VDOT/Municipal experience is a plus
  • Prior knowledge of VDOT standards is plus
